Have you tried to change the setting of contrast variable resistor VR2  
on the main board MA1M? Maybe it will help...

I have changed display in my CZ3000 for modern one with LED backlight,  
even I couldn't find service manual for this machine. I had only that  
one for CZ5000 and other CZ instruments, fortunately it looks like  
they use the same standard of controller (14 pin HD44780). So I think  
it would be possible to change also display in CZ1, if you find the  
same size.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
