If it's the proper drive, you don't need to tape over the HD hole since the drive has no HD sensor.  That's only to fool PC drives into formatting an HD disk as DD.

However, HD disks still won't work.  They're substantially different magnetically from DD disks.

You could try cleaning the heads in the disk drive with either a suitable cleaning disk or *very carefully* with a cotton bud and IPA.
