Hi Marty, well, if you check the sound of an FM-Synth that works with complex waveforms like the FS1R, FM7 or FMHeaven you will see that it can sound very much like the Casio CZ oder VZ Synthesizers. Especially the waveforms of the FS1R reacts very much like the ones of the VZ-1. Please check my little VZ tutorial to see how to programm the VZ-1 like an FM-Synth. I tried and compared the results and got very close with only minor differences in sound that probably arise due to the different implementations of the algorithms... Other than that compare Casios description of Phase Distortion in the CZ-Manual with the Yamaha Patents... http://smasher.suspicious.org/fs1r/links Especially this one... http://www.delphion.com/cgi-bin/viewpat.cmd/US04249447__ I also think that the following link should be interesting for you too http://www.funet.fi/pub/sci/audio/misc/pm-intro I had this discussion before, so please check the archives I hope this helps... ...Summa On 7 Sep 2002 at 14:40, fructuscrataegi wrote: > Hello, > > the FM-synthesis is so well explained. The PD synthesis not at all. > The question is,what happens in PD ? > For FM it is all well known. But PD or the iPD is still a mystery. > > A lot voices say, that PD is similiar to FM.That´s not true. > PD and FM belong to the same family, they are both waveshapingsytems. > But Waveshaping is really a big field,so that both synthesissystems > can not claim it. > The actionfield of operators in FM and PD are different. > FM can be called as an upperfrequencyversion of Pitchmodulation by LFO. > Or the analog crossmodulation. > This means, that FM changes always the frequency of modulation. > That´s why there can be a Ratio Parameter. > In PD it is not like that. The explanation in the poor manual of Casio > about PD/iPD,as a guitarplayer with several OD/Dist stomboxes in row is > much better. > The PD does not FM the next module,it distorts it.(Not like a > Fuzzface),that´s why tuning the second module makes no sense. > For FM such Ratio makes big sense. For PD not ! > PD has only one FM,the low Vibrato tool. > PD works more as a guitar overdrive as a FM synth. > FM stretches and squiches the frequency by modulation. > In PD this happens only for the half phase.Difficult to explain. > > The Casio PD synthesis is more guitaristiclike as the FM. > > But until now I didn´t found a good resource on the Web,explaining > PD in Detail. > The only thing I can say is,that PD and FM are different and not > similiar. > > Marty > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: > CZsynth-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com > > > > Your use of Yahoo!
