VZ10m display weirdness

VZ10m display weirdness

2003-09-24 by crustypaul

I've got something weird happening with the display of my VZ10m (its
a Hohner HS-2/E actually but its exactly the same machine). Every now
and then the screen seems to jump downwards and the bottom of the
display jumps to the top as if the screen has rolled over somehow.
Its only ever one line of characters that appears at the top. Another
wierd thing is that occasionally the vertical lines of some
characters seem to vanish i.e. the upright of a L or E character will
disappear.
Has anyone else ever encountered this problem and how do i go about
fixing it? It looks like the symptoms of a dying internal battery or
maybe a connector is loose inside but i'd rather see if anyone else
has fixed this problem before poking around inside
Cheers
Paul

Ooh, an HS-2/E- I'm envious.

I've never heard of it before. I don't think it would be a bad battery-
sounds more like a loose ribbon cable or something. Maybe you can fiddle
around with it a bit. Just be careful if you go taking everything apart-
I've heard that there's a very flimsy and thin cable going from the board
with the display drivers to the LCD itself. If you tear this then there's
really nothing you can do to fix it.

I was actually nerdy enough to open up my VZ-10M just to take photos of the
insides. Looking at them, I can see that the cable to the display is a big
white cable that goes from the main board (the one on top after you've
opened it up). So one end is really easy to get to. The other end goes
down behind the display driver board and around the bottom- so if you want
to mess with that side you'll probably have to take the front panel off or
something.
