Repairing velocity sensitivity?

Repairing velocity sensitivity?

2003-09-26 by crustypaul

Talking of replacement keys for casio keyboards, does anyone know how
to sort out the velocity sensitivity on casio keyboards. The velocity
sensing is fine on most of the keys of my FZ-1 but a few of them
around the middle C are now only steam hammer sensitive as opposed to
velocity sensitive. Is this a fairly simple matter of opening it up
(as if opening an FZ is ever simple) and cleaning the contacts or is
there some more brutal repair work involved?

As far as I know, the FZ-1 keyboard should sense velocity with two rows of
rubber dome switches. Probably what you need to do is take everything apart
and clean the switch contacts.

Here's the page of the VZ-1 service manual describing how it works. I'd
assume it's the same for the FZ-1.

Yea, check the VZ service manual. It's most likely that it's the same mechanism.

My VZ-1 had the same symptoms, I opened it up, lifted off the rubber bubble pad and
carefully blew out the dust. Don't wipe away the grease! That stuff is difficult to
replace. If you clean that off you'll drastically reduce the reliability and life of the
keyboard.

Also, be extra careful that you put all the wiring back in exactly the same positions. If
you don't, you risk having the contacts slightly raised and loosing aftertouch
sensitivity. There are a lot of screws and cabling to get through to access the
keyboard contacts.
