Sysex with a VZ-10M

Sysex with a VZ-10M

2004-04-20 by gusmm.geo

Hi all. I'm trying to transmit some Sysex libraries for the first
time to my VZ-10M and I can't find the right way to do it.

I've tried several Sysex programs (SysEx1.0, ChangeIt!, and even
VZPATCH which gives me errors on WinME, therefore I haven't been
able to effectively use it), without success.

The VZ is configured to receive on channel 1, excluse parameter is
enabled, and I manually set it to receive MIDI VOICE/OP. I'm using a
MOTU MicroExpress to merge all my MIDI setup and I've been always
able to control the VZ from a Roland JV-90 that I use as my master
keyboard.

I'm able to transmit the memory content to the PC successfully, as
it indicates so, but it is a different situation when I try to
upload from the PC back to the VZ. Anyone has any clue on how to
sort it out? I've noticed every program uses a different MIDI config
on regards to block size, etc. but I'm not quite sure what it means.

Gus.

i was running into the same problems. it seems that all those vz-tools
are only running on win98... i am on xp now and it also doesn´t work
for me! For simple sysex dumps use "midiox". But when you want to
transfer vz specific files (".vz1" or whatever they are called) you
have to use win98. However what do you mena with the program "VZPATCH"
? Is it that one from Easy VeeZee?

Yes Phono, that same one. I thought it was ultimately going to make
the trick for me (as it was programmed specifically for the VZs),
but it doesn't seem to like my system's MIDI config. When I restart
the computer with the MidiExpress off so that I just get the few
MIDI I/Os from my two PC sound cards, then it starts up well, but
shortly after it presents an error message and shuts down. I fear
it's 16bit code and in several cases, run-time DLLs have functions
no longer compatible with newer OS, as you implied.

I tried yesterday Midi-OX and it didn't work either, although I
liked it the most among the handful progs I've tried so far. It
seems it is something with the way the VZ-10M accepts SysEx
commands, as I can do a memory dump to the PC apparently well. But
uploading a bank from the PC, that's a different story.

I can try to program something by myself using VC++ v6 so that any
kind of OS incompatibility is no longer a factor, but I was trying
to avoid it if possible as I'd have to study the VZ's SysEx
implementation and I guess be willing to do some trial and error.

I don't know, any other idea?

Gus.

i guess a lot of people would be happy if you could make that VZPATCH
editor working on XP or others OS somehow. The guy that programmed the
orginal software seems to be not interested in doing that. But you may
ask him friendly?

when you want to transfer pure SYSEX FILES, midiox should be working
for you. The problem that i also have is to upload all the VZ Sounds
and Banks that are stored with that special VZ Extension (*.VZ1)

also a simple converter could do the job: VZ1->SYSEX
-p

Sorry to bark in,
but have you tried Emagic SoundDiver ?
I seem to remember that the VZ is supported.

Re: Sysex with a VZ-10M

As silly as it could seem, that's quite a good point Darth. I wanted
to buy one a few months ago just to discover that Emagic had just
discontinued the Windows version. Although there is still limited
support on its Yahoo group, they publicaly announced it wasn't going
to be upgraded anymore. Reasons: Unknown as far as I understand (I
guess a rather deeper Emagic's marketing motivation, who knows, but
I'd guess it wasn't because lack of sales as I bet Win sales must
have been higher than Mac-OS).

Anyway, I couldn't find any copy available out there, and I also
refuse to buy a >$150 piece of software that is going to be obsolete
in a couple of years (or less). But the whole situation is really a
shame, as Win users are now left with virtually no other option than
MidiQuest (I don't consider Unisyn being one), and you don't see as
many addepts as SDs'.

I have SD Win OEM for my Kawai K5000 and I really like it. But can't
use it for anything else... =-(

Gus.

Sorry, I didn't follow the thread from the begining.
What's the thing with the VZ file format ? (sorry I don't keep an archive)
Tonight I checked SoundDiver v. 3.0.5 for you and the VZ-10M
is supported indeed. However I couldn't find any extra menu item which
would refer to a special file import/export operation and the standard
options are SMF and raw sysex.
So I installed the VZ-10M in demo mode and checked through the edit pages
and still couldn't find such an option...

That file format Phono is talking about is the custom format that
program (VZPATCH) uses to save VZ's banks when dumped to the PC.

I imagine it includes some extra info Steve (the guy who programmed
it) uses for some internal functionality of the program.

I don't think there is any prog to convert between the two formats
(.vz1 -> .syx and vice-versa). You are right about SD, the only
format it should be able to handle is pure SysEx.

What OS are you using Darth? Are you able to dump banks (both ways)
successfully to the VZ with SD?

Gus.

Hi,
I'm using WinXP Professional flat (no service packs).
Unfortunately I can't comment on the VZ. I only have a CZ-1
which works perfect with SD. That's why I had to install the
VZ in demo mode. However I assume SD works equally well with
the VZ, it's supported for a long time and the ocassional bugs may
have benn ironed out. Generally to answer the comments on the
usability of SD I couldn't live without it - all my modules are supported
and handled equally well. Since I'm using Logic it's a must for me,
and the Logic-SD autolink feature is a godsend...

RE: [CZsynth] Sysex with a VZ-10M

2004-04-23 by Graham Owen

Hi

Just to chip in...

The VZ is supported by Midi Quest from Sound Quest so if you are in the
market for an Editor Librarian this may be an option.

I have had no problems loading Sysex to a VZ-8 from XP.

The files that you have in VZ1 format, do you know where they were sourced?
They may be copies of the widely available presets so you might find them in
Sysex format somewhere...

I'm sure that I had the free editor working on XP at one point but no longer
have it installed so can't verify this at the moment.

Regards

Graham
