Hello my friends

Hello my friends

2004-06-08 by Renô

I'm new here and i'm from Brazil.

I have a band and we bought a synth VZ-1 without the
functions viewfinder (is that the name of that part?) and
it's not available here anywhere.

It is on a very good condition but we also have no manual
and all files i found as programming manual , for instance,
refers to that visor .

Is there any place where i can find the original VZ-1
MANUAL from Casio that you folks know ?

thanks in advance and cheers from Brasil !

Reno

Hi Reno,

and welcome to the list...

You can download a scan of Powerplay VZ from the files section of this list, what
hopefully covers most of your questions...

I not sure about the "functions viewfinder", can you try to describe it?

You mean that plastic card with the names of the menus on it? That's the
only thing I can imagine you would be referring to- It's definately not
needed and you can make your own if you want.

Surprisingly, Casio tends to be pretty good about sending people manuals,
but I don't know if it would be available in Brazil, or in your language of
choice..

Anyway the manual is fairly crappy and only useful for learning the basic
functions- the menus, saving sounds, etc. It doesn't go into any detail.

Hi, Reno, welcome to the Casio freaks band!

I guess that when you say 'without the functions viewfinder' you mean that
the LCD display is not available.

- is really missing or broken? It would be though to repair it by yourself,
I haven't heard of that display as a spare part. Maybe some repair shop can
get one for you.

- you have the display but see nothing? It could be a problem with the
contrast setting. Try to press and hold the DISPLAY key, then move the
VALUE slider to change the contrast.

- if you have no backlight, you can replace the backlight film (search this
group for addresses) or you can use a small reading lamp over the display
to read it.

Should you have no chance, you still can work with the synth (patch select
and so on) but it will be hard to program. You always can connect a
computer via MIDI and run a patch editor, but there will be things that you
will have to guess (memory protect off, midi channel selection...).

Good luck!!

Re: [CZsynth] Hello my friends

Hi Pdi... thanks for your attention.

I was talking about the LCD display, in fact.

Sorry for the confusion on the right name of that part.

Our VZ-1 doesn't have it. It's all prepared to receive a new (or even
used) display, in a very good condition but we have only a empty
space instead of a broken display.

So, even for the basic functions, the original manual would be
very helpfull since the programmimg and other advanced functions
are available in the file section of some groups (i believe that in
this group too) and i have already downloaded them.

If anybody knows , in english, spanish, french or portuguese ,
where i can find this manual i would be very important for us.

Thanks again, Reno

Hi Scott.. thanks for your attention.

Pls , see the msg i just sent to the group where i explain
everything i need and our actual situation.

I mean our, because i don't play the keyboard (just bass-guitar)
but the band needs some tips so we can use VZ-1 , at least, on
it's basic functions. In Brazilian's Casio assistance there's no
chance 'cause i talked to them already.

Thanks, Reno

Hi, Reno,

I don't remember anybody posting the manual as a PDF, maybe someone have it
scanned and can send it to you. Search in the old messages in the Yahoo
group to see if someone offered it.

You have some basic instructions into the "service manual" (pp. 27-36),
that can be downloaded from the files section.

If all you need is to select patches, you won't need the display, just use
the buttons and leds.

If you need to adjust some parameter, then you will have to enter the
menus. And of course, if you want to program or modify a patch...

Anyway, the user interface is not very convenient, and editing patches is
much easier with a PC and the VZpatch.exe program.

Let us know.

Good luck,

pdi

If the display is gone then there might not even be a way to replace it. I
have heard that the display itself is connected by a very thin and fragile
plastic ribbon cable which is basically impossible to repair. But, maybe if
the whole assembly is missing (the display and whatever it's connected to)
then you might be able to find another. The problem is, I very highly doubt
that any parts are available now, most likely you would have to take a
display out of another unit. It would probably be very difficult to find a
broken one to use the display (because they're very well-made and reliable),
so if you want a fully-functional VZ-1 it would probably be more practical
just to find one that works.

(Actually, if you know someone who's good at electronics, it *might* be
possible to somehow put a generic 64x96 pixel LCD display in there, but that
would probably be pretty difficult as well, if it can even be done).

Casio America probably has the manual, but I don't know if they'll mail it
to Brazil.

If you're going to try to operate it "blind", then good luck- it's difficult
enough to use *with* the display. But for basic sound selections: pressing
the "NORMAL" button will play single patches- select one by its
corresponding number and letter- A-8 or D-3 or whatever. If you have a
card, then the "INTERNAL SUSTAIN" and "CARD END" buttons will switch between
the internal sounds and the card sounds (respectively). If it's a ROM card
(as opposed to a RAM card) then you can press "CARD END" again to switch to
the second bank of sounds on the card (RAM cards only have one bank).

For all the "MENU" screens, the first time you press the button, the up and
down arrow buttons ("NO" and "YES") and "VALUE" slider select the menu page.
pressing the same "MENU" button again lets you select the paramters with
the "CURSOR" buttons and change them with the arrow buttons and "VALUE"
slider. This stupid interface will probably make it very difficult to do
much editing.

Pressing "MENU 1" goes into the patch editing but I really doubt it's
possible to do anything useful here if you can't see what you're doing. One
very basic thing you can do, though, is press the "MODULE ON/OFF" buttons (A
through H) to turn the 8 oscillators on and off- the row of 8 LEDs show you
which ones are on and which are off. "MENU 2" edits things like the
monophonic mode, portamento, and controller parameters. You can change some
stuff here without much trouble. On the first menu page (press "PLAY" or
"NORMAL" to make sure you're on the main screen, then press "MENU 2" twice
to edit the parameters), the first parameter is portamento time- change it
with the "VALUE" slider or up and down arrows. Lower values mean faster
portamento, higher values mean slower. Pressing the right "CURSOR" button
moves you to portamento mode- press down for time constant portamento, up
for rate constant portamento. Pressing the right "CURSOR" button again
moves you to monophonic mode: up for on, down for off. These settings apply
to all patches. The rest of the menu pages are probably not worth messing
with- it gets too confusing. "MENU 3" contains stuff like memory protect,
midi channel selecting, tuning, etc. It's probably not a good idea to mess
around in there for now. If it's out of tune, I can tell you how to fix
that but it's not worth bothering with the rest of it..

The "OPERATION MEMORY" button selects combined sounds- with layering,
keyboard splits, and stuff like that, generally they have a fuller sound,
but less polyphony. Selecting these sounds works the same as in "NORMAL"
mode.

If you want to reset everything to factory presets, hold down the "WRITE
COPY/INITIALIZE" button while turning it on, then press "YES" while still
holding it.
