CZandroid 101 (if you have a CZ-1-read this thread!)

2005-05-12 by M.J.B.

Alright Summa, I can't take it anymore-it's May
12th and I am so excited about how to learn
CZandroid, an ATARI ST program that is a CZ-1
editor and library. When you get a chance can
you write and tell me how to get your 80's
patches to load into my cz-1 using this software.
Bear in mind, I have steam 2.06, MIDI is
fuctional-every thing is ready.

There is a demo file that is in the software that
Tim(ATARI MIDI MAN) said that can be run only in
medium resoultion. But with all the settings
right, when I click on the demo file, it starts
up and then stops. Something is wrong.

Can't wait to hear from you Summa. I know you
are busy so whenever you can.

Hi,

it's in the middle of the night over here, so I hope this posting makes sense ;)

I was able to get the software running but pretty badly. Only single sounds and
only at lowest midi speed seems to work and even then transmission isn't working
every time, while I even got an old 2.x Cubase Version running on the emulator...
I remember that I had better results before, maybe with a slower computer or an
older Steem version or using another MIDI interface...

You could try the Steem list for help with the configuration...

http://www.freelists.org/list/steem

That's how CZ Android works:

After Start and changing to the right midi channel with Options/MIDI Channel, set
Options/Select CZ Bank to the right bank type, since it also defines what kind of
CZ you're using.

In the files menue you can load a file to Workbank A or B with the File --> WB A
or File --> WB B Option.

After you loaded a file it's drag and drop... simply drag the Sound from one of
the Workbank to CZ Internal and hope to get no Synth I/O Error...

If everything fails you can still use my best of MIDI File and load it into your
CZ by using a sequenzer... ;)

I as well have all my sounds in sounddiver format, but used a real ATARI ST for
the transmission and probably be able to export them as midi...

You guessed it Summa,

I'm getting the "I/O error."

But maybe I don't have the cz-1 configured right.

What settings does the CZ-1 have to be on to
recieve the patch info?

I have been going by the directions in the manual
under the MIDI chapter for the settings (CZ-1 -
CZ-1)

I click "save MIDI" then it says

SAVE MIDI
  RUN

Then i click and drag on czandroid and get the
i/o error.

The cz- reads...

SAVE MIDI DATA
  **ERRORR**

I can tell from my interface by a blinking light
that the interface recieves a signal from
czadroid but something happens the second it
reaches the cz-1 which causes the error.

Thanks Summa and everyone else, I'm not giving
up!

Summa,

alright-i think i'm going to have a mental
breakdown if i don't stop and tell you where i am
at with trying unsuccessfully to get czandroid
working. i've tried this whole weekend and I've
failed thus far.

can you please tell me the exact steps you took
when you got it to work on steem 2.06.

What settings was did you have configured on
steem?-Memory, MIDI,(you said the lowest setting,
how did you do that?) etc.

VERY IMPORTANT: How do you prepare the CZ-1 for
recieving: i think i have it right going to the
"MIDI-save" setting but i may be wrong.

once the patch is loaded, how do you find it on
the cz-1?

thanks summa and others who might be able to
help. i hope this thread will prove helpful for
others in the future.

I doubt you use Steem 2.06, not sure if such a version ever exist. I guess you're
using TOS 2.06 (the Version of the ATARI OS)...

Memory shouldn't make a difference, since the software was even working with the
very old Disk TOS Version..

I set MIDI Input Speed to 1%, not sure if this is necessary on another system,
still think it's a timing problem with my AMT8 midi interface...

Press the MIDI button, then press UP, Then set Ton Data = ena

Make sure the protection switch at the back of your CZ is set to off as well...

Make sure to set the CZ and Android to the Same MIDI Channel...

You'll find it exactly at the place you copy it, since CZandroid allows to access
to access A1-A8 to H1-H8...
When editing it's in the edit buffer...

Summa,

Great news! I can get a patch to transfer every
15th try or so. Now I'm a little more confident
that maybe we could get this to work. But every
15 time???

I set my MIDI percentage to 1%.

Do you have any other suggestions how I could
tamper with the settings on steem or the cz-1 to
improve the transfer? I get so many "I/0 error"
messages...

thank you, thank you
micah

Hi,

you seem to have the same midi sync problems I had, what MIDI Interface are you
using. I think the steem programmers are no musicians so I guess it might work
better with more simple interface like the built in ones of a soundcard. Other
than that, you could try to get some tipps in Steem group. I used a real ATARI ST
(and still have one) to get the sound to the CZ and afterwards PC and Sounddiver.
If it's just the sounds, I could try to save them as MIDI dump with sounddiver...
