VZ synthesizer discussion...what does it really do?

2005-07-26 by yazzofever

Okay I understand the concept of sampling. What I am after here is
what is everyone's thoughts and comments on the synthesizer aspect of
the VZ line of synths. What does it really sound like?

For instance, let's say I have a piano sample. Now I run it through
the VZ-1, 10m, 20m and what happens? Does it sound like a "CZ-ish"
piano. What does the synth engine on the VZ do? Can you describe the
sound. Is it something completly different then the CZ sound?

Look forward to hearing from you VZ users....

The VZ is a synth it's not able to playback samples, but the FZ series can do
that...
When it comes to the VZ/CZ comparison, you could check the archive first, we had
some discussion about that topic and it might give you an idea...

VZ synthesizer discussion...what does it really do?

Sorry Summa,

I meant FZ.

So, I did check the archive, I'm wondering about
more information regarding the FZ synthesis
engine. I know it can sample, but what does
synth part sound like?

The synth part is a simple sample creation unit, with synth waveforms and static
additive synthesis...
Other than that the sampler is equiped with Filter, LFO, multistage envelopes and
(very nice) multi loops...

(changed) FZ synthesizer discussion...what does it really do?

Thanks for the specs but...

How would you DESCRIBE the synth sound on the FZ?

The samples are 16 bit so they are clean but what
happens when you them through the synth engine?

Re: [CZsynth] (changed) FZ synthesizer discussion...what does it really do?

2005-07-26 by Summa

16 bit is no garantie for a clean sound, it only works with 36Khz and don't
forget, when it comes to sampling, transposing the sound up and down creates some
artefacts when sampler isn't or is hardly interpolating the sound. So other than
todays softsamplers the FZ can create nice gritty sound when pitching down a
samples and if I remember right the filter is kind of harsh too...

I'm just curious, how does the multi loop thing work?

does it hold one loop for one period of time then play the next one? Can
the loop points be placed arbitrarily in the sample or do subsequent loops
have to after previous ones?

Re: [CZsynth] (changed) FZ synthesizer discussion...what does it re ally do?

I think FZ is not only clean but also warm because of its analog filter.
I suspect that the filter may be the same as other CASIO's 2-pole analog
filters - HZ/HT series.
With a good analog chorus effect, FZ can be used like an older digital/
analog synths like KAWAI K3 and KORG DW-8000.
I wish FZ had more polyphony - it has only 8 oscillators. When you layer
2 OSCs you'll get only 4 voices.

Layering ist not needed when using samples with detuned oscillators/wavforms or
using the internal double function to calculate one...

If I remember right there's a loop count parameter and sustain and release loop...
Been a while since I worked with a friends FZ-1, but in the 80s I had it at home
for a few weeks...

Someone told me that the FZ-1 in a sense has a
"CZ-1" inside of it-meaning that it of course
samples but also can push the samples through
phase distortion. Is that true? Does anyone
have any mp3 examples we could hear of the fz-1?

Sound like quite some nonsense to me, even if that would be possible the CZ
Synths don't have filters no real and no emulated ones, it's rather some kind of
FM type synthesis. Only the Envelopes of FZ and CZ are similar but they're even
more similar to the ones of the VZ-Series...
Could be someone mixed up the complete Casio Pro-Series...
Long time ago I had some of my old songs online, using CZ-1 and FZ-1 together, I
can mail you an MP3 where you'd be able to hear the filtersweep, just contact me
off list...
