VZ-1 ROM/RAM CARDS

VZ-1 ROM/RAM CARDS

2006-09-07 by Luiz Eugenio Birochi Rebecca

Hi!
I bought a VZ1 here in Sao Paulo for a bargain price, but with no
RAM/ROM cards and without the led display. Can anybody give me a hint
on how to get them? Im using just the factory pre-set voices and I
miss very much an accoustic piano, as well as Hammond organ and a
couple of strings sounds. I think the ROM card has what I need, and the
led display would bring my VZ1 back to shape. Thanks in advance for a
help.

Well, the best source of all three is this group, and
eBay (though they're rare). You do not need cards to
get it actually working though, if you have MIDIfied
computer, you can load and store banks and patches on
disk (it's cheaper, by the way).

Can you elaborate on "no display" issue? Do you mean
it's just backlight faded away, or your VZ doesn't
have any?

As for accoustic piano- well, you actually bought
_wrong_ instrument (tongue in cheek); it's a very
powerful synthesizer, yet it's not for accoustic
sounds (not that you can't do piano if you really try-
the same goes for Hammond emulation). This synth is
for powerful "in your face" sounds, gritty, agressive-
I love to hate it, that's why I bought one :)

Hi, Rambo.
First of all, thanks for your tips. Well, when I said no display I meant that my VZ came without the part installed, so you can see the inner side through the display aperture. Maybe it failed and the previous owner removed it to show to electronic dealers or something like that. Or worse, maybe he canibalized this unit to complete another one, who knows...
Although, as you said, it will be quite difficult to have accoustic-like sounds out a VZ1, it will be good if I can have other piano voices as the factory pre-set pianos are of little use. A little better for strings and organs.
Now, could you explain me what a MIDIfied computer means? Is it required a specific board or other add-ons?
  Many thks for your help.
  Luiz

Basically: most computers as of today are equipped
with "Game port" (or historically: MPU-401 port, from
first use in Roland expansion card), that, with use of
$5 cable, can be used as MIDI port.

You can also buy USB->MIDI interface if you use laptop
for example.

Then you can load/store your patches and banks as
SysEx data from/to computer.
