I would think that you could just use white acrylic sheet instead of bead blasted clear. The white I've used is quite translucent (I have another project I've been working on that uses it) and as a result, you might want to consider giving that a try.

Thanks for the tip (and good to see you over here) :)

I think I'll go for amber LEDs in the short term and see what happens... 
But if I can get some white or colored acrylics, I do have some 
ultrabright white LEDs to try.
