VZ10M and data RA-500 RAM card archiving

VZ10M and data RA-500 RAM card archiving

2012-04-20 by Graham

I just recently bought a RA-500 RAM card to go with my VZ-10M and PG380 guitar synth, after my old card died. When I got the card, it had a lot of good sounds on it that were useful to me, so I didn't want to lose them, but had no immediate use for them.

I tried a few ways of dumping them to computer using various software (VZ Patch, MIDI-Ox etc) but often I would get error messages and corrupted files. As I needed to get these files off the card to load my own sounds on it, I resorted to dragging out my old Alesis Datadisk datafiler, which I'd forgotten about. What a Godsend this thing is!! Totally reliable data transfer and archiving, albeit to floppy disk, but at least the transfer was not corrupting the files.

Just a heads-up about this, if you're having trouble saving your banks or patches to computer. These Datadisks go for pretty cheap on ebay and go well with the VZ or any synth capable of MIDI sysex data dumping.

Cheers, graham

Same reliable Data Filer and MIDI song player is Yamaha MDF2 or 3 I've
been using for years.

excellent thinking, gents. i had completely dismissed
those machines. but a great way to store/restore sysex,
and you wouldn't mind keeping floppies for that, would you?
kinda like having memory cards for all your machines, and
much less abstract than some lost file on a hard drive, or
a sysex part in a cubase project.
could you give a little more info on what it is like to use them?

They're ultra simple to use. Just hook up the MIDI out of your VZ to the MIDI IN of the data disk.

Have a floppy disk ready in the Datadisk (after formatting it in the Datadisk.

Press the RECEIVE button on the Datadisk.

It will then display "waiting for sysex" or something like that. Send out your voice, OPMEM or VC+OP data from your VZ and it will automatically start receiving it and storing it to floppy, calling it "FILE01" as default. If you send another sysex dump it will save it as "FILE02" - it will increment the data file so as to not overwrite the first one.

That's it! From there you can do things to the file like give it a name etc but its as simple as that.

To reload a file into your VZ just have the MIDI OUT of the Datadisk plugged into the MIDI IN of the VZ. Scroll through the files with the up/down arrows on the Datadisk until the required one shows. Have the VZ ready to receive (Sysex set to on, memory protect off etc.). Simply press SEND on the Datadisk. That easy!!

MIDI channel is irrelevant, so no need to set channels.

If you do buy one, there are 2 variants - the earlier "Datadisk" and the later "Datadisk SQ" - SQ stands for sequencer. They're both perfect for data archiving, so it doesn't matter, but the SQ can be used as a MIDI sequence recorder/playback sequencer as well!!

I bought the RA-500 off ebay - it's the only place you'll find them.

Do they work with the cz101. The cz101 doesn't have an on board to send or receive, but relies on commands from thye storage device. Many thanks, Karl May
