CZ5000 restoring and customizing.

2014-04-29 by <juanma71@...>

Hi people.

I'm a follower of this group for years, but this is my first serious post.

I've been restoring my old Casio CZ-5000 during last days. These are the main new features:

- backlight LCD

- new painting work

- new graphical work

The restoration and customizing process was done keeping in mind the cost, so do not expect great results.

I'll put some pictures of the full process in the photos section.

Regards,

Juan.

Saw the pictures earlier. Glad to finally get your post! Are you going to give a detailed description? Or have you and I haven't received it yet?

Hey Juan,

Great restoration work! Do you have any photos of the final result?

Also, I would be very interested the "stickers" (you called them) for all the front panel graphics restoration. How did you create these? What was the application process?

Any reason you didn't go for a completely new, modern back-lit display? (Instead of just retrofitted a light to the original one.) Today's LCD displays have higher contrast and much faster response time.

Or, better yet, use an OLED display, which have a 180 degree field of view. I replaced with the display in my Alesis MMT-8 with an OLED and it looks sharp! I plan to do my CZ-101 someday. Speaking of Casios, I'm also in the process of replacing the backlight on my VZ-10M (not the LCD display itself, just the backlight) with a backlight from an iPhone.

Thanks,
- Matt

Owner of one CZ-101 and one VZ-10M (neither in need of restoration, luckily).

Thanks for the post Matt..

I have a VZ10m in urgent need of a new screen..

Do you (or anyone here ) know of any replacement options?

I fitted a backlight, but the screen has oxidised and is blue/orange and has no legend at all :-(

I hate not having the thing working, as in my opinion, the VZ10m is a superb synth, and I would hate to lose the use of it forever ...

hoping and praying that someone here can suggest something

Hi Richard,

Sorry to hear that your VZ-10M is not feeling well. Unfortunately, from what I understand, the LCD in the VZ synths was a custom part. So, I'm afraid you won't be able to find any kind of standard modern (or even not-so-modern) equivalent part to easily replace it with.

Your best bet is either to obtain another working VZ-10M (or Hohner HS-2/E, re-branded from Casio) instead, or a non-working VZ-10M, VZ-1, or HS-2/E that has a good screen that you could swap to yours.

Occasionally, you see VZ-10M and VZ-1 units appear on ebay (though I've never seen a Hohner HS-2/E). There was a VZ-10M there recently, although the listing seems to have disappeared. Set up a search on ebay to email whenever new listings arrive. Craigslist is also a good place to check.

it's definitely a custom part and I've not found any spares being sold. I did a lot of hunting, my screen is 90% functional and I was pre-emptively trying to find a solution before it totally goes. had a look at whether a clone of the board is feasible, but couldn't find an equivalent display and even the driver chips were special order so you would have to design your own board from scratch using available parts.

if it's totally broken then finding a scrap machine to strip parts from is the only real option.

Thanks for the advice folks.
.
I saw the VZ10m on e-bay a few weeks ago, but the price seemed a bit high, and although a replacement machine might be a good idea at some point, I did not invest in it at the time.

I have never ever seen 'breaking for parts' Hohners or VZ1/ VZ10m's at all, and I regularly search evil-bay..

However, I did get a pointer from Vucan who is on this list and lives in Serbia, (thanks so much Vucan) to a 'breaking for parts' VZ1 in his hometown ..
Serbia is just next door to me here in Bulgaria, so it looks as if that's going ahead.. ( Mega Fantastically GREAT! )

It needs a VZ10m backlight, which I bought new from Germany a few months ago, and it has the VZ1 logo'd front screen, which I may swap over, along with the display.

So I'll have a unique and custom phase distortion Casio, (( a VZ10m 'badged' as a VZ1 !! :-))

I can't wait to get the screen installed and working, as I've missed being able to use the VZ10m really a lot...
The voices its capable of are in my opinion truly unique. (although time -consuming of course, but then that's probably half the fun :-) .

I might buy another, if I can find one at a good price, although the spares situation is sad..and I have been really miserable thinking that I might have had to break it, and sell it for spares..

and I know its sacrilege, but has anyone tried this?? ;

TubeOhm PhaseWave PD (Phase Distortion Synthese VST Plugin)

thanks to analogmonster, Matt, Vucan et al for the help..

Best of luck restoring it...I've had mine since '85, is still in great shape. There should be some links to restoration, see which ones will give you a good idea of how to do it.
