Hey, Yes you can do Midi dumps to the FZ samplers, however the only software to do so is for windows XP or Mac Os9.....and back even further Atari ST.

Be aware that a midi sample dump is a slow process

I have had success in the past using VMware Fusion, running on OSX emulating Windows XP to transfer samples. I currently use an old OS9 Ibook and Alchemy to send samples back and forth, but really because of how long it takes, I generally just sample and save to my HXC floppy emulator....

The windows program is called FZDump. see this video Casio FZ1: Downloading sample to FZ1

If you have access to an older PC with a serial port you can hack up a cable for much faster transfers
see this post Casio FZ1 - Page 3 - Vintage Synth Explorer Forums

So it can be done, Also I think on Rainer Buchty's site there is info on how to convert a PC floppy for use in the FZ

Hey Jonah, like I said in the first line of my reply the software I suggested is for Windows XP and MAc OS9, so the only way to use them is in machines running those OS's or through emulation eg VMware Fusion, Sheepshaver where your current setup emulates those operating systems.

Here is a link to the alchemy software http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/alchemy-30

There are MSdos programs for sample transfer, I don't run windows so I don't know if you can boot into a DOS mode in windows eight, I believe you could on older versions of windows
see here for FZDUMP Index of /midi/casio/fz1

I just picked up Alesis data disk - don't know if anyone has had any experience with these - but it occurred to me that it is another possible way to solve FZ disk problems - the manual says it supports handshaking.I intend testing it with the FZ to see what happens.
There is an 800k limit on files though which may cause a problem.

I tested the FZ with the Alesis - I have the same problem with the Alesis as the PC - the MIDI dump hangs and times out - regardless of whether I have two MIDI leads in to facilitate handshaking.
The Alesis has so far worked with the Roland D5 and S10 - the latter solving the forever faulty Quickdisk system which suffers from drive belt deterioration.
The FZ has [Remote Mode] set in the brackets and I have seen reference to this before - as far as I can tell this cannot be changed.

I have an inkling I have a problem with 'local' versus 'remote' setting - and have a similar problem to:

Thanks for the help Stuart and Mike.

The audio problem turned out to be caused by changed MIDI settings by one of the sample download programs I tried (but never successfully). My FZ is now in eternal REMOTE mode and volume can only be changed through midi, not local with the slider.

I am searching how to reset the FZ into LOCAL mode again.

I suspect similarly that I have mine set to REMOTE by some SYSx code and do not know how to get it back to local control.I'd appreciate any help with this,as it may explain why it is hanging with the Alesis.

Hey Lee, that's good news about the S10, that's the first solution I've heard for the quickdisk nightmare, although I imagine it is quite slow...there was talk in the HXC forums of a quickdisk solution, but I don't think there has been anything forthcoming.

I'm afraid I have nothing to offer in regard to the problem you are experiencing, I had a look at the sysex pdf for the FZ and there was no mention of placing it in local/remote mode via sysex....if a solution could be found maybe it could be used as an advantage (setting the FZ to remote mode over sysex). There is an indication in the PDF that there seems to be no effect in changing the master volume remotely using sysex, but the fact that a sysex command exists for volume change exists must mean that surely it can be changed.

Again Sorry I have no help to offer

After reading the fz data structures it becomes evident that the fz sends in blocks of 1024 with headers.
I tried the Alesis on 'receive multiple sysx' (which works with yamaha pss series voice files which have 5 sysx in one transmission) presuming a block might count as 'one sysx message' - alas this did not work either.

The manual details the 'remote code' sysx which I presume is the first message sent by a pc when it wants data.
I do not recall what my fz said in the square brackets when I first got it, but I am fairly certain it was not 'remote'
The previous mail detailed someone saying there's was stuck in 'remote mode' and I do not know if this affects transfers initiated from the fz.

I tried sending 'close midi' which is the last thing a pc ought to send after communicating hoping to see a change in the 'remote' status, but nothing altered.
I am unaware as to whether anything other than 'remote' is shown in the brackets beneath the device selection, but it seems logically suggestive that some other state should be evident at some point.

Remonte mode can't be change. you have to select the mode and type enter to place the FZ1 in remote mode. In remonte mode you can start the dump from a computer ( load or save ).
You can also do a dump in data dump menu if in device menu you have select midi.
If i remember correctly you can't do handshake dump with the Alesis.
On XP I use File EX to do midi dump.

Thanks all for the feedback.

So there is never a state where the brackets ever say anything other than 'remote mode'?
Or can it be changed?
File Ex works with fz dumps?

I believe I have tried all the dumper progs with no success from pc to fz.

Yes it can. I have this model Of Gotek instales on My fz10m, First you need to flash it with the special Firmware SM32 Of HXC emulador hxc2001.com. ti install on FZ is easy dusconnect floppy drive and Connect Gotek remember Gotek S0 and M0 pins CLOSED... I use indexed mode of HXC Firmware with pendrive 4gb stored 1000 virtual diskettes on Gotek. DSK0000, 0001, etc... To 999.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
