It's not -- I've certainly complained about it on this list before, and I did so in response to someone else's complaint. :-) It's a silly restriction; my guess as to why it's there is because Dave is just one guy doing everything and he didn't want to be bothered writing the code to deal with it. To tell the truth, combo mode in general seems like a bit of a quick hack (not the concept, but the implementation).
