The reason behind this is to still have the flexibility of the matrix but with additional "fixed" controller/sysex for things you are using quite often (Filter, Q, Level, etc.). Also, having 16 buttons you can forget about the shift function. Anyway, I read the manual and it does not seem to work anyway.
