Cool. but again, I saw on the MOTU site that the the fastlane has a thru function that allows standalone use . . .

Thanks ravi. I will definitly get a merger cause i want
the ES-1 or Evolver as the masterclock AND i want to
control the Evolver + XT from my Midi controller keyboard.

The problem with Fastlane is that it needs a USB
source for connection and since i don't have a computer
on stage, i can't use it as a merger. I'm gonna get
a Midiman 1x4 merger box i think.

So, i think Es-1 should be the Masterclock since i could send
pattern changes to the Evolver. For the last time i promise :),
tell me if this sounds right:

Controller, out --> ES-1, out + thru --> ins merger box, out -->
to XT or Evolver in, Thru --> to XT or Evolver in.

This way i should be able to control Xt + Evolver with my keyboard
and have the 3 units sync to ES-1 as the masterclock, yes...no ?

Thanks again. This is greatly appreciated,

Simon

I think the fastlane has a midi THRU button for standalone use. Check your manual you may already have the merger you need.

Otherwise just choose which you want to control with your keyboard controller, the XT, the evolver or the ES-1, without some sort of thru you can't control more than one IF you alse want all the boxes synced. Whichever you choose to control, you have to make the first in the chain after then controller.

So to control the evolver and have evolver as the midiclock, then controller, out -> Evolver, out -> XT, thru -> ES-1. Note you will only be able to play the evolver from the controller.

Well you learn everyday :)
I was going insane here, trying to do something very
basic i thought. Thanks Ravi.

However, i'm not exactly sure if i need a Thru or a switcher box.
Let me tell you what i want to do, maybe you can suggest which
one to buy. I really don't have $$$, so the full blown midi interface
is out of the question.

Btw, i have a Fastlane Midi interface from Motu for computer
sequencing and i guess it will not work as a thru box, right ?
Anyways, it's USB powered so i wont not be able to plug it in.

So, i'm preparing for a live gig where i want to use an Electribe ES-1
(will get it this week) and the Evolver for rythm parts AND
the Waldorf Xt as a sound source. I also want to use a couple of
channels with XT's Arp playing in sync with his 2 buddys. I'm
doing this with a singer / bass player.

Usually, i presequence
the XT on the Yamaha rs7000 but had to sell it for $$. Anyhow, i'm
trying to do more things live now. I thought i'd finally use Nanoloop on my
Gameboy but the Midi cable offered by Oliver does not work with the oldest
gameboy, damn ;)

Thanks again for your help

I take it that you want your midi controller to both "play" the evolver and
the XT as well, as well as have the Evolver be the master clock to run the
arps in the XT. You can do this but you need a midi-merge box. Remember that
the THRU socket only sends out whatever is recieved into the IN socket, it
doesn't add anything or pass anything from the actual unit that the THRU
socket is on. All that stuff comes from the OUT. Some synths have a built in
merger which allows data received at the in to merge with the data from the
host unit and all be sent out the OUT. However neither the XT nor the
Evolver do thi.

You need to do this: Your midi controller OUT to the Evolver IN, the
Evolver's OUT *and* THRU to the INS on the midi-merge box, and the
midi-merge OUT to the IN of the XT. This way the midi controller controls
both the Evovler and the XT and the Evolver clocks are merged into such data
and sent to the XT.

Beware that a midi merge box is not the same as a midi splitter turned
backwards! Get a real midi thru box. Midiman and Phil Rees make these, they
are not too expensive.

Or you can get a midi switcher which will allow you to switch to what your
midicontroller goes to. The best but most expensive solution is to get a
full blown midi interface. Many of these act as stand alone units too. What
they do is pass the clock from on unit to all the midi outs (basically
taking care of the merge).
