RE: [Evolver] PEK volume lower from midi than useing keyboard

2006-07-05 by Andrew Capon

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for all you help, I know that the output is 3 db off, this is
very annoying!

The test I did is still valid though. Please see enclosed jpg.

Top left is PEK audio recorded while playing, I also recorded the midi
and then played this back to the PEK and recorded the audio which is
shown top right. The bottom two are for the desktop, recording was
redone for this test using a different midi controller.

Cheers

Andy

Hi Andrew,

there is a volume difference between the Desktop Eolver and all other
Evolver models. The Desktop Evolver's audio out is around 3 dB louder
than
the outs of the other models.

I can't. If I could it wouldn't be of much use because my PEK is a unit
from
the pre-series-production ;)

No other ideas about your problem then, sorry. Hope support can help.

Hi Stefan,

I have just done a test using my desktop evolver which produces the
correct
volume.

I then disconnected the midi leads from the desktop and attached them to
the
PEK and re-did the test and the volume is lower, so it definitely looks
like
the PEK rather than the Cubase/midi controller setup.

I have had a look at the global settings and can find nothing that looks

like it may be affecting the PEK.

I have emailed support so maybe they can shed some light on this.

Also I am beginning to think that the shop has sent me a returned PEK as
the
settings seem to be a a little wrong. Can you remember what the
Transpose
and LCD contrast were set to on your PEK when you first got it?

Thanks

Andy

Maybe you should check first if there isn't a kind of midi filtering in
your
PC system.

Or you can connect the PEKs midi In and Out with a cable, thus
eliminating
all influences of external interface and Cubase, switch it to local off
and
then check if there are volume differences in comparison to local on
mode
without cable. I know that this is difficult to judge because you need
to
hit identic velocity values during playing.

I hardly can imagine that there's a reason for this inside the PEK, more
likely in the external midi chain.

If a PEK and PER are chained for more polyphony they communicate via
midi
too and normally there are no volume differences between the units.

Another possibility could be in the global parameters. I don't have them
in
mind atm, maybe you can check if there are midi parameters switched off
that
could influence the reacting on external midi.

Hi Stefan,

Do you think It is faulty?

I got it yesterday so am thinking of ringing them for a replacement.

My evolver desktop does not act in this way.

Hi Andrew,

That's weird indeed. Don't know how this can happen.

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for the reply.

I have the PEK connected to a pc via midi using Cubase SX3.

If I play something on the PEK and record the midi and audio, then play
the midi back to the PEK and record the audio in Cubase it is then
between 4 and 6 db lower!

Cheers

Andy

No this is not normal, assuming that the notes that come via midi have
the
same velocity as the motes you send from the keyboard.

Maybe you can explain in detail what you mean with "driven by midi" ?

Hi Guys,

My PEK has much lower volume output when driven by midi than when driven
by the keyboard, is this normal?

Cheers
