Re: [Evolver] VCA level drone

2003-01-22 by Ravi Sharma

Yes! The VCA level is the overall vca level! If it is anything other than
zero then it is open and you can hear the oscs. Most synths do not have this
control. Rather they are hard set with VCA level=0. Instead they use the VCA
Envelope to open and close the VCA level set to taste. Thus if you want to
run your evolver like a "normal" synth, keep VCA Level=0 and use the ADSR
and Env Amt. parameter. (or keep env amt=0 and turn velocity (shift) up--see
below).

So why the VCA Level control and drones? Well it can be nice to have drones
but it is even more important when the Evovler is used as an effects unit
with the external inputs. In order for the input sound to be heard, the VCA
Level must be up and open, else the sound will only get through if you
trigger the VCA Envelopes with a midi signal. This could be difficult with
guitar or a non midi sound source, so the VCA Level holds the door open so
to speak when you need it. For triggering of envelopes with non-midi sound
sources you turn the VCA level down (close the gate) and use the input sound
trigger to fire the envelopes (open and close the door).

While we are on the topic of the VCA etc, if you want to have VCA Velocity
be effective at all, you have to turn VCA Env Amt to zero. If VCA Env Amt is
full, then velocity has no effect because full is full and there is nothing
for the velocity to effect (especially since dave hasn't made it +/- I don't
think (yet?)). I personally think this was a waste of a knob. There should
hav been simply a singe velocity parameter which when turned down, equally
turned up the env amt, because the two parameters are inversely
counterdependent, when one is up the other should be equally down, no
exceptions. Strange huh?
