Flute characteristic is without doubt interesting, but imho it's more the 
breath controller characteristic than the flute sound. Programming a basic 
flute sound isn't difficult, but it's not quite easy to program and play 
velocity, aftertouch, modwheel and bender in a way that it sounds as if 
blown.
Keyboards are rather limited controllers, it's difficult to gain 
expressiveness from keys.

I personally find flute characteristic as one of most suitable for
solo voices in various kind of music. Though use sometimes the "real"
samples, it is even more interesting to layer or develop interesting
voices starting from "flute" sctratch.
Would like to know others experiences with it.
