tee hee, I wonder if Dave Smith has ever used things like
an MC-505?  I know he's a synth-wizard, but is he familiar
with what "the kiddies" have been doing in the late 90's!
anyway, that's just meant as an amusing thought...

I actually wanted to add that

1) I agree a mode like this
would be useful, and

2) you might want to make it blink
the upcoming pattern number until it takes hold (like
the mc-505).  And 

3) You might want to make it so you
have to press a button to lock in the next pattern, because
sometimes, it could take a few bars to find the proper next
pattern.  and 

4) you might want to make it so that you can force the next
pattern to be loaded in immediately with a second press
of that button.

whew.

fwiw, I haven't been treating my patches with any sort of
terrific reverence.  I often just bulldoze, IDF-style (*), through
my patches, creating new sounds, then overwriting the old
ones, often before I even record them.
