I would imagine people call it an upgrade because the pots 'work better' as compared to the crappy encoders used on the PEK..... people normally call that type of replacement an upgrade.

Like, "I just upgraded my monitors because the ones I was using previously sucked donkey balls"

i dont mind the encoders ---if they work consistantly- -- i like that they respond to how fast you turn them---this is handy with 1-128 range  parameters-- - WHY DO ALL THESE PEOPLE IN THIS FORUM CALL THE POTS AN "UPGRADE"?

i think with pots, they can have a performance mode vs editmode (one is 
faster one slower) (isn't this the case with pot upgrades for the po 08 
and polyevolver? )
i like encoders, its easier for a synth with memory and less confusion, 
but than the have work 100%, and for performing live, some encoders 
would be handier by being faster (or having this reaction mode). (you 
still kan use the + and - buttons too fine tune in the end)
to make clear what i say, the jumpy non reacting encoders can have this 
behavouir that in one patch have this problem, put on another patch and 
the same knob reacts like their is no problem, etc its to me not the 
same reaction than having a scratchy pot ( = more consistent all the way)
