Re: [DSI Synths] Digest Number 1744

Just about any potentiometer will get crackly (for audio) or jumpy (for data) if it's left unused for long periods of time.

If you really want to keep dust out, you need to cover your synth with plastic or metal - cloth won't keep enough dust out, and may produce fibers/dust of its own.

The Deoxit product folks talk about here can help, but most modern pots are "self-cleaning". Just turn them a bunch through their full range of motion, and see if that helps.

it are encoders (not pots), and when the go jumpy or not reacting it
isn't very much logical (it isn't the same in every patch etc) kind like
a virus
it doesn't come better with using more, it getss worse, more knobs will
follow, its not the same than a scratchy pot
dexoit helped me for 3 months without a problem, but last time i went
playing a show, when i put on it got those encoders problemes again with
one knob not reacting
i hope the pot edition for the mek will solve these problems for good

there is talk here that the problem is not encoders VS. pots , but cheap shortlived encoders versus better quality encoders... encoders get jumpy /pots get scratchy . I dont see how a 3/4 revolution pot will easily allow you to make small adjustments in a 1-128 range--- encoders give you multiple revolutions to do the 1-128 range, but yes, some do get way too sensitive and dont seem to have consistant effect. Does anyone know of a specific HIGH QUALITY line/brand of encoders and their source ?

i think with pots, they can have a performance mode vs editmode (one is
faster one slower) (isn't this the case with pot upgrades for the po 08
and polyevolver?)
i like encoders, its easier for a synth with memory and less confusion,
but than the have work 100%, and for performing live, some encoders
would be handier by being faster (or having this reaction mode). (you
still kan use the + and - buttons too fine tune in the end)
to make clear what i say, the jumpy non reacting encoders can have this
behavouir that in one patch have this problem, put on another patch and
the same knob reacts like their is no problem, etc its to me not the
same reaction than having a scratchy pot ( = more consistent all the way)

time for some action

i dont mind the encoders ---if they work consistantly--- i like that they respond to how fast you turn them---this is handy with 1-128 range parameters--- WHY DO ALL THESE PEOPLE IN THIS FORUM CALL THE POTS AN "UPGRADE"?

I would imagine people call it an upgrade because the pots 'work better' as compared to the crappy encoders used on the PEK..... people normally call that type of replacement an upgrade.

Like, "I just upgraded my monitors because the ones I was using previously sucked donkey balls"
