Invert the phase of delay means that when it is summed back with the 
original signal it will cancel (or reinforce) part it.




If you sum a signal and the same signal with the phase reversed you 
get nada. 




when you shift in time one of the signal you cancel from signal one 
what is in signal 2, but you add whatever is not present in signal one 
as well.... thus creating interesting shifts in timbre.




You could in theory invert the phase just mixing the delayed signal 
back by exactly half a period of the signal, but that's pretty hard to 
achieve in general.
