Re: [Evolver] Korg WS comparision..

2003-03-21 by Ravi Ivan Sharma

I have both. They are completely different! The Evolver (monosynth) has waves to choose from in two of its oscillators and you can have the waves sequenced with the sequencer function of the evolver, but that is where the comparison ends. The wavestation (polysynth) can have an oscillator play a wave or a sequence of waves. Each wave need not be a single cycle waveform like the evolver, but can be a real sample. That's a huge distinction. In the wavestation, you can press a key and have a long evolving string of samples executed (could be a drum loop type thing, or a morphing set of textures). In addition the wavestation not only sequences a string of wave, but you can fade from one to the other, i.e. overlap (not a morph--but a crossfade).
Anyway the wavestation is a very strong synth but has its own limitations as well which in some respects the evolver trumps. I.e., ease of use. The wavestation is so deep if you want it to be that setting up a single detailed wavesequence and patch is essentially authoring a finished piece in and of itself.
Essentially they are completely, utterly different beasts, although they have have the same creator, Dave Smith.

I have a recent track (needs a bit of a remix) that uses only wavestation and evolver for everything (with minimoog for bass). The opening and closing lush sounds come from a single patch of the wavestation and you can hear all the tinkling wavesequences going on, everything else, strings, wind, drums etc, except for the bassline are handplayed on Wavestation (no sequencing, I made this using ACID). The evolver on kicks in in the break and adds the two distorted lines that run to then end and the eighth-note repeating riff that fades in at the bridge as well and also the higher pitched dual droning line that happens near the end too.
Listen: Track was written with the recently downed Space Shuttle in mind and is called "STS-107" and can be found here: http://505cs.iuma.com

Subject: [Evolver] Korg WS comparision..

Hello,

I'm new to this list - this is my first post.. I haven't yet got an Evolver, but I hopefully within a couple of months... I'll sneak around here and learn as much as possible until then..

Now to my question... besides the Evolver I'm also very interested in another synth - the Korg Wavestation. Someone told me that the Evolver could do what the WS could... if so, I'd much rather go for the Evolver (which I probably will, anyway)

Could someone that are used to both machines care to post a comparision or something? I'd be very thankful. Evolver being monophonic isn't an issue at all... but can it do those "evolving" (ahem..) constantly changing pads that the WS can?
