What's your weekend looking like?

What's your weekend looking like?

2003-08-28 by ski_ex5tech

What's your weekend looking like? Is everyone going to be around
this weekend, and will you have the opportunity to spend some quality
time with your Evolvers? Also, does everyone have MIDIOX, or some
other means to load files into their Evolvers?

Just curious...

I have to say that I've put mine back in the box. It is just too difficult to use easily. I originally thought I could use it as an elaborate guitar processor, but I could never get the hang of it. I used to love patch-bay synths, but with column and row switching, this unit is much more difficult to patch. I believe because I can't visually 'see' what I've got like I could with a lot of wires.

Wow, Craig, I'm hugely disappointed to hear that. You did some VERY
nice work with your adaptation of "Sweet Child O' Mine" on the Evo.
That's one of my favorite sequences.

I'm not a SoundDiver (or anything emagic) fan at all - long story -
but have you tried the SoundDiver editor for the Evo? Maybe that
would let you "see" the patches the way you like.

I'm in the same boat as well.... Every time I plan to work with the
Evo I end up on the Virus b, XTk, NL2... or another knob laden
synth.

Every time I work with the Evo at some point I grab and twist a knob
that is set to the wrong row. So then it becomes.... "ok, up the
filter cutoff, lets see, which row is selected, oops wrong one, ok
row selected, now find the knob.... ok cutoff is up." It really
hinders my creative flow.

I don't own SoundDiver, hopefully someone creates a dedicated
editor.

But..... If I had a new file to send to the Evo this weekend maybe I
would spend some time with it!!!!

Re: What's your weekend looking like?

Sayer, I understand, because I went through a period where I did the
same thing quite frequently, and accidentally adjust the wrong
parameter and ruin an editing session. I almost never have that
problem anymore, and I attribute that to two things:

1. The position and placement of my Evo was previously such that my
hand would block my vision from a big part of the front panel
whenever I was grabbing a knob to edit. In particular, the vertical
strip of "active row indicator" LED's on the left was blocked. I
repositioned the unit to avoid that problem, and it helped a LOT.

2. Experience (read that "spending too much time") with programming
the Evo yields much better familiarity with the front panel layout.
It also made me develop a little more mental discipline while
editing; I now always give a quick visual check of the "row
indicator" LED's prior to tweaking a knob, yet I don't feel like I'm
being slowed down.

All that said... YES, a big knob/slider/switch studded panel would be
wonderful. Of course, as recently discussed in another thread, that
would result in a significantly higher price, and a much larger box.
You get some, you give some! ;)

I wouldn't mind a dedicated software editor myself. Maybe I'll
program one someday, because I won't buy an emagic product due to
problems I had with them even *before* they decided to cease
development and support of their Windows products. I've been meaning
to try the MIDI Quest editor/librarian, though. Maybe it would be a
good alternative.

Another possibility would be to get a hardware control surface (like
a Phat Boy on steroids), but I don't think anything out there has
enough knobs to cover most of Evo's functions. Actually, I don't
think TWO of anything out there has enough knobs! ;) Let's see...
you have 8 editing rows times 8 knobs times 2 for the shift function,
which gives you *128* parms. Then you have the top row, which adds
another *16* parms. Then you have to add the sequencer mode, which
is an 8x8 matrix for another *64* parms. So that's 128 + 16 + 64 =
208 knobs that you would need on a hardware controller in order to
have a knob for every function. Did I miss any? Oh, yeah, and you'd
need two buttons for the sequencer start/stop and reset functions. ;)

Tell me THAT wouldn't be cool... a polyphonic "Evolver KB5" keyboard
synth with 208 knobs on the front panel! Ha! Truth be told, I'd
actually *like* to have *some* of the knobs serve muliple (but
related) functions - such as having just 16 knobs for the sequencer,
with a button or switch to select between editing tracks 1 through 4.

the Doepfer Drehbank has 64 knobs. so you can assign a significant
number of the Evo's parameters to it (in fact, someone in here has one
and mentioned doing this in another thread). *however* it costs as much
as a new Evolver :-) for me, that would be the big issue: do I want more
control or more sound/polyphony?

I don't think that the sequencer values are MIDI-editable, are they?

No Sayer, I don't have a clue about Soundiver. I'm really a 'hands on' guy. I don't like to use the computer for music; too tedious for me.

Oh well, your loss.....

Though I do agree that it's not quite as easy to program as I'd like either,
I think you definately get out what you put in, and if you make the time to
adapt to it's idiosyncracies, you can come up with some great sounds.... the
demo mp3s put out by various list members are testament to that.

I'm not sure how busy you are, but if you put aside a week of spare time to
play with the evolver, and *just* concentrate on the evolver, it could be
really worth it! I mean you've already invested $500, so how about you
invest a little time too.

But *damn* I wish it had a 16x2 or 20x2 LCD.... I would have gladly paid the
extra $30-50 or so it would have cost on the final price, just to have a
slightly less terse description of what I was editing, and to have patch
names.

Re: [Evolver] What's your weekend looking like?

Well, it's really not my loss. I'm a working guitar player in 2 bands and just really don't feel like sitting and programming the thing very often. Maybe during the winter, when I'm cooped up indoors more often, I'll break it back out. If I were a keyboard player, per se, I'd have the Evolver hooked up to the rest of my gear. I do know how to program the thing, and I can work out the patches, having built and used a huge PAIA system back in the late '70's taught me that. It just has seemed to consume more time than I've felt like spending on it, that's all.
Best regards to all,

Re: [Evolver] Re: What's your weekend looking like?

2003-08-30 by Ravi Sharma

Well, although I haven't tried it yet myself, some synths (at least my
JP8080) have the ability to remap out the midi data output from the midi out
as a result of moving their controls. I think I could set up my jp8080 such
that all the functions would correstpond to the evolver and control it. Sure
it wouldn't be as comprehensive as all the evolver functions, but it would
cover the basics pretty well. I wonder if a knob laden synth like the virus
can do that? If it can't I am sure you can place a computer with some
software inbetween any synth that sends out controller data from its surface
and the evolver to give it more meaningful control than say 64 knobs on a
box. Just an idea.

Hooowee! Nothing like laying the guilt trip on me (though I probably
deserve it)! ;) I'm hurrying, I'm hurrying! Of course, if SOME
people hadn't given me dozens of items without names... ;)

Sit tight. :)

Yeah. One of my band mates has the original. It's quite a little gadget. I may eventually pick one up for myself. Thanks.

loading sysex files from mac

2003-09-07 by Kevin Harrison

Hi

new member here. anyone know how to load (2003 soundset sysex) from mac?
I've been able to load the original banks from the midi files provided
on the site from digital performer.
new to DP4.1 and evolver.

many thanks

Kevin, I don't currently have a Mac, but you *should* be able to open
the .syx (SysEx) file with most any sequencer, and send it to the
Evolver over MIDI. Take a look through the menus in Performer, or
hit the owner's manual and look for "sysex". Let us know how it goes.

Re: [Evolver] Re: loading sysex files from mac

2003-09-08 by Kevin Harrison

Hi Ski,

I tried earlier in the day to load sysex into DP4, no luck there.
consulted owners manual could not find anything useful there either,
so I decided to give you guys a mail. I then found 'SysEx 48' by Steve
Grace on archive CD this wouldn't work under Mac OS 9.2 (memory error).
Finally I found (freeware) 'SysExLibrarian' by Kurt Revis at
http://www.snoize.com this is a OSX utility and worked just fine. Now
I can sit back and have a good listen to the 2003 Sound Set you guys
have been creating. I think evolver sounds great, though I'm still
scratching the surface as regards programming my own sounds/sequences.
By the way I think the evolver interface seems user-friendly, except
for the somewhat cryptic display.

Many Thanks

Kevin (spectro52)

Wow, I'm shocked that Performer won't work with a SysEx file. That's
almost unbelievable! It's not as if it is a cheap shareware app, or
a brand new app that hasn't had time to mature. Oh well. Glad you
found that "SysExLibrarian" by Kurt Revis. Everybody will have to
keep that one in mind the next time this issue pops up with a Mac
user. Thanks!

hehe... figures... two guys with similar handles and
both named kevin. especially in light of the fact that
ski and I were discussing privately the issue of
loading sys-ex files in soft sequencers earlier this
week. the internet is making this world too small ;-)

2003 Sound Set

2003-09-09 by Kevin Harrison

Just writing to thank everyone involved with producing 2003 Sound Set.

footnote:

DP 4.1 supports sysex and can transmit/edit etc.
I just couldn't find a way to import/load sysex files.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
