Dave Needs YOU! (for Poly Evolver preset programming)

Dave Needs YOU! (for Poly Evolver preset programming)

2004-01-26 by ski_ex5tech

Dave is looking for a few good sound programmers to author some Poly
Evolver presets, and asked me to post this request in the forums.
The same text can be found on his News page at
www.davesmithinstruments.com, and on the EX5Tech Evolver forum. For
anyone that's serious about this, I can promise that you won't be
disappointed in the Poly!

Quote from Dave:
- - - - - - - - - -
I need sound programmers! As I finalize the Poly Evolver for its
April release, I need to fill in 512 Programs and 384 Combos. Anyone
interested in making some sounds on a Poly, please send me an email.
Here's the deal: you will get a Poly for 7 to 10 days if you can
guarantee that you will have the time to really crank out some sounds
(I've had problems with this in the past). The sounds need to be
fully tweaked (tuned, all mods routed, etc.), and I need everything
from the clean/simple analog sounds of the past to the
wild/crazy/over-the-top sounds that the Evolver voice is so good at.
As a dinky company, I don't have the budgets of the big companies for
a team of programmers, but I can at least offer product discounts
commensurate with the quality and quantity of programs produced.

I sent in some samples, hopefully I'll get a shot. If for no other
reason than as a thanks, as the Evolver is one of those pieces of kit
I've been kicked to the couch for spooning late at night... ;-]

Oh, and as thanks for that whole MIDI thing that seems to be all the

Couldn't stop myself - bought a second evolver

2004-01-31 by Gene Schwartz

I'm in the process (somewhat exhilarating) of replenishing my studio after
having had to sell off almost everything during an extended period of
unemployment awhile back...

I got an evolver a couple of weeks ago, and have found it to be one of the
funnest synths I've ever played, an experience that probably a few of you
can identify with.

yesterday I was in Robotspeak in S.F. , and they had a Perfourmer and the
drum machine (forget name) by Vermona. These are nice toys, definitely - I
was especially drawn to the Perfourmer, which seems like a particularly
unique synth - lacking in programming capability where you usually find it,
but having some unique flexibilities. But as I was testing these out, I
started noticing that they had an evolver lurking close by, and I started
realizing that I really wanted a second one more than I wanted either of
these (might not have gotten to that point if you could save patch memory on
the Vermona synths).

This was last night - I'm just scratching the surface at this point - spent
too much time last night trying to figure out how to use the Poly Chain mode
while hooked up to Logic. I ran into the following issues - I'll mention
them in case it might save someone some time in the future, and also in case
anyone wants to make fun of me. One thing I didn't keep straight initially
was that, once you have the synths hooked up correctly, there are 2
important settings that can influence your mental condition, Poly Chain
mode, and the MIDI xmit. What happens (I think this is what was happening,
it's all a blur now, since I was drinking Chimay to help me think more
clearly) - you have MIDI Xmit (and receive on the 2nd evolver) set to either
xmit parameters or All (which seem like a reasonable setting if you want
your knob turns to register on both units), and you change the Poly Chain
mode to All or notes, then a MIDI feedback loop can form between the
Evolvers and Logic (or other sequencer), since the poly chain mode setting
gets sent to the second evolver. This was driving me crazy for awhile.

Perhaps there's something that I'm missing (hope so), but I'd like to see
this capability made a little more user friendly somehow.

I suppose you could argue that poly-chain is a `local' setting, and that
evolvers should ignore incoming poly-chain changes, but OTOH for those
(rich) people that are chaining six evolvers, the current behavior could be
a lot more convenient.

I think in general if you're constructing a midi loop through a sequencer
like that you've simply got to be careful though, because there are lots of
potential problems like this; obviously once you realize the issue, it's
simple enough to fix, either by filtering in the sequencer, or just
manually turning off poly-chain in the second evolver.

I don't necessarily disagree with any of this, but given that sometimes you
would want this behavior, and sometimes you wouldn't, I don't see why there
couldn't be, say, a MIDI transmit mode that excluded MIDI settings - and/or
a MIDI receive mode that excluded them. When would you ever want the last
evolver in a chain to have the Poly Chain on?

Definitely there are things that one 'should' remember when operating a
synth, but part of the 'ease of use' factor is to try to eliminate the
danger that comes from being absent minded. Analogously to the above, I'd
like to see a setting that locked the bank/program number. Like you say
above - it's easy enough to remember to save, but it's also really easy on
the evolver (at least I find it so) to forget in the heat of the moment
that, for instance, you don't have the sequencer button pushed, and you lose
all your changes because you've accidentally turned the program knob.

The Evolver is not only a wonderful synthesizer, but a multipurpose unit.
Today I used it to record my Electroencephalogramm when I was in saturday

eventually anyway...

make me an offer. The only thing I lack is the box (though I might still be
able to get it) - I left the box at the store, and just put it in my
backpack. About a week old.

Hello,

I'm new to the list (evolver in the mail, here tomorrow?!), so
forgive me if I tread on covered territory.

What elektron (another dinky company) did with the monomachine is to
pre-release it for beta-testing and patch programming for 25% off
list. This way, they had lots of hands/man hours reporting bugs and
tweaking complex patches. I only had time to create and send in one
multi-patch, but it was accepted. I also submitted a slew of bug
reports, which were all fixed. Dave should consider selling 20-50
somewhat discounted poly's for patch creation... but it really
depends on his schedule, which I doubt can tolerate a month or two
for patches to start coming in.

Really looking forward to sequencing the evolver with my
monomachine! A match made in mono-heaven?

hi gene,

i just joined the list (just now), because i'm looking to get an
evolver to use with my wind synth rig (i love my microkorg, but i
just don't need the kbd, and i think the evolver will sound better
in any case). audiomidi seems to sell them for $479, i'd be willing
to spend $450 (hopefully including shipping). let me know if this
might work for you.

button replacements

2004-02-10 by blip

hi there...

my shift button seems to have gone slack, likely from excessive noodling
of FM amounts, heh. does anyone know e.g. a mouser part number for a
replacement? are they relatively easy to remove and install? i do have
electronics repair experience, i just don't want to muck around in there
if the button is buried under four PCBs or something...

thanks...

it seems like my start/stop button is not responding the way it used to
either. which is weird, because I didn't notice it until after a period
of not using the Evolver (thanks to the arrival of the Monomachine! :-).
but now I have to press it two or three times in order to get it to
work. anyone else have these problems? the machine's less than a year
old, so I'm wondering whether it would be worthwhile to talk to Dave
about it or just fix it myself.

Blip and Joe -

I would definitely contact Dave prior to making any purchases or
performing any surgery yourselves, especially if your Evolvers are
still under warranty. From what I've seen, Dave has always provided
extremely good service to anyone needing it. Plus, if there are
problems with the buttons, I'm sure he'll want to know about it; if
the problems were frequent, he might want to start using a different
supplier.

Even if your Evolvers are out of warranty, I'd contact Dave first.
At a bare minimum, he'd be able to tell you where to get exact
replacement parts, but I'm sure he'd go farther than that to help you.
