Mine says 1 1, and 1 1. Is this what everyone is seeing?

Well, this was going to be discovered sooner or later:

Press the 1 and 2 row buttons at the same time.

Press the 1 and 3 row buttons at the same time.

They are the software and DSP versions.

Ravi, you wouldn't be pulling our leg now, would you? ;) Mine
shows "1 0" and "1 0". And though I have a rather early unit (s/n
00009) I have to believe that *your* Evolver has an even lower s/n.
You wouldn't happen to have already gotten an OS update from Dave,
have you?!

1.1 and 1.1 here too.
Serial # 00022, but I had the 1.0 board replaced with a Rev 1.2 just
this week.

oops sorry! I forgot to mention I bought a second Evolver #177, so has the slightly modified board I guess. I didn't check my first unit, but I am positive it will say as yours, 1 0 and 1 0.

In any event, based on what DW said, the OS is the first number so the first and second batches have the same OS. It is just the dsp number that is changed.

BTW I still have not got around to trying out some pure AB sound comparisons to see if like patches on both batches sound the same or not.

I will post some data when I find out. My first inclination is to say that the sound is different, however I am pretty sure the presets are tweaked differently on the newer models and of course there are some different patches, which I should ask dave to make available individually on his website. Otherwise I am sure we can start our own patch archive right here.

I did see someone on the Evolver thread on the gas station claim to have done A/B comparison and found identical sounds and even has posted some sound patches.

Jason, did you have problems with #00022? If not, why did you have
the board replaced?

That was me - I'm juno60 over at the Gas Station...I've got so many
different nicknames at so many sites, I really should fix that.
Here's the link if anyone is interested:
http://www.absynthinteractive.com/evolver.htm

I was mainly A/B'ing the "noise" issue, but in nearly all of my tests
the basic sound of the boards seems the same to me. The only
difference I occaisionally noticed could be attributed to a
difference in the level of OSC 2, which may be linked to the same
problem that was causing the noise in the first place.

Ravi - Cripes, I remembered that you'd bought a second unit right
after I made that last post! Prior to spending the time to do
extensive sound comparisons between your two units, why don't you
first ask Dave what changes were made? That would at least let you
know what to listen for, and probably save you some time if nothing
else.

Yes, it had that static noise problem in OSC 2 that showed up in a
handful of the first batch of boards. The replacement is a 100%
improvement.

Re: [Evolver] Re: for a good time...

2002-12-20 by Ravi Ivan Sharma

It's not going to be that extensive. I just haven't had time to see if the same exact patch sounds exactly the same in both evolvers (sans any potential noise issues (that I am not certain my earlier unit has--although I am sure if anyone tries *hard* enough they will find something)), etc.

Sound differences in JP's patches comparison

2002-12-20 by Ski <ex5tech@excite.com>

I checked them out, and I could easily tell the difference between
the old and new board on Patch 1. Of course, with a good part of
Evolver being analog, you might get that much difference in two
samples from the SAME board!

While not exactly duplicates, I found the differences between the old
and the new board on Patch 2 to be insignificant. BTW, that's a very
cool little riff you made in the Patch 2 sequence. You should send
that one to Dave if he doesn't already have it.

RE: [Evolver] Sound differences in JP's patches comparison

2002-12-20 by Don Gothard (dg)

I just got a replacement board today as well (yee-hah!) as I also
suffered from the static noise thing from an early batch. My A/B
comparison shows that the replacement board sounds better to my ears
(not very scientific though). Also the static noise is not there anymore
which could cloud my tests :)
