I'd have to say no. Its buggy, limited and difficult to use and there is no
support for it. Like others here I had to ask for a refund. I'd love to have
some really good software for the evolver - especicially for the sequencer.

Heh,
Moog just announced the release of its PC editing software for the voyager, with mac software to follow soon.
Guess who makes it? You betcha!
Maybe Bob forgot to check references with Dave . . .

Hello,

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere in the past but now there's
a newer version of the software, I think, and a new crop of users
maybe asking the same question I am to themselves.

Should I shill out the fifty bucks and get the software editor from
Dave? Is it worth it? What are like the top five benefits of using
it.

Thanks

Yes! I bought the program just for that profile and I'm extremely
happy with it. In the summer he(bob melvin) was working on a
profile for the Poly as well so maybe it's already finnished by
now. If you have any questions about it, if I were you I'd email the
DP forum at Yahoo. He seems to read and respond to the ones
that have to do with Unisyn. If you use DP I wouldn't hesitate but if
you use another sequencer you might want to check it out first to
be sure it works well with it.

I am going to disagree with richard here. I have never had any
problems with the software. It is a little different than what you
are used to (especially since the sequencer is set up like a old
analog seq.) but I find it well laid out and considerably easier to
use than just programing the front panel. Just download the demo
which does have some functionality and check it out. Plus having the
features like uploading your own waveforms and the genetics may not be
available on the MOTU. As far as bugs, I had mine eat it all of once.
Most of that my be more with issues with VB6 and other components (at
least that is my take). I thought it was worth it.

.. and I must diagree with your disagreement :)

'bugs' does not equate to 'crash'. Yes the editor has not crashed
for me, but some of its most basic functionality is bugged.

For example; take any PC editor and..

a) Select a preset from the library
b) Edit the preset and tweak some params
c) Select 'Save single preset'

What would you expect? I think 99.9999999% would say it saves your
edited preset. Wrong! With DSI it saves the original libarary
preset. When I reported this the author confirmed there is *no* way
to save a single edited preset apart from writing it back to a empty
library, or saving it in the Evolver and saving it from there.

A fix was promised months ago. After I lost a few good edits I just
gave up and ditched the editor.

Re: [Evolver] Evolver SoftWare Worth It ?

I have several of the SoundTower editors and I tell you that I they
alternate between amazing and frustrating. The interface is
inscrutable and there are whole sections of the program that you are
sort of left to your own devices on how they work. Also, generally
it can be difficult and unforgiving, so if "ease of use" is one of
your big concerns, then don't buy it, you will be sad and
frustrated. Support can be spotty, sometimes you get a response
instantly, sometimes never.

That said, feature-wise I think its pretty amazing and deep and is
better than any of the other editors out there (which in my mind is
not saying a ton). The stuff like Phantom Banks, Genetics, and
Snapshots are ideas that I think the other editors should really
take a page from.

Its just too bad the usability is so low, otherwise you would really
have a great tool to match the Poly. I am tempted to purchase
something like Unisyn as a librarian, and just use the SoundTower
editor for developing new patches.

I speak ONLY of the PC version.

According to the help file (I am speaking of the sept 04 update)
"Saving and Loading Single Programs

Use the right mouse button pop-up menu to save the selected single
program to a file or place it into a bank."

so I believe this issue has been resolved. The inclusion of the help
file was also a nice touch (the orginal didnt have one from what I
remember). The help file is available for download with the 2.0.1
software on their site.

I have been a sequential user for a while so I am used to certain
Daveisms with regard to programing his gear so I usually accept the
bugs and just work around them. I still hold that the editor is a
worthwhile peice of software if for the wave shaper and sequencer
editing alone and with the new update, I think you should take another
look especially if you paid for it already.

Ah, apologies I had no idea there had been an update. Might have
been nice to mailshot the registered users?

I'll give it another try.

cheers

Ok then, here's one happy user of the PC version again.

I've made tons of sounds with the help of the editor. It works like charm on
my system.
As with every software there are a few things that could be better.
I am glad in particular to have a sufficient librarian as an extra of the
soft.

It's easy to learn, a big help especially in terms of the Poly Evcolver.

Regards
Stefan

It's true, the waveform editor on the Unisyn editor isn't the most
intuitive. You have to shape it then load it and save it in Evo then
use it in a patch so you can hear it. There's no real time editing of
the waveform. At least that's how I've understood it so far. It was
the only thing i was disappointed with in it.

I just got the editor and am experiencing this same problem, is there
a way to save and recall patches without saving the to the evolver
onbord banks first?

Thanx,
d
