Call Dave Smith and talk to him about it. There may be a problem.
But before you do, tell us what patches you are talking about. Since many of the patches are intentionally distorted!

Subject: [Evolver] clipping

Hi
I only ask this being worried of a malfunction, since 99.9% of the
reviews and testimonials about evolver are 10/10 and "oh my god..".
Many of the default patches -at volumes as low as 50 or even lower-
clips horribly,i mean, not distorted, but cheap static and very harsh.
Now,I know i can fix this by setting individual volumes of the osc at
low levels,and checking the feedback,and....but I ask,is it ok,is it
like this with all evolvers?
I don't know,it just doesn't feel ok to have a lot of the patches
sounding cheaper than a bad vsti...especially such a great synth, great
architecture, great reviews....I expect that from my nord modular, not
from an analog synth(hybrid,yes).
Please, help me,is my little blue box broken?
I really do not mean to be ironic or..I am just very sad,I love that
kind of synth architecture,i know it's not supposed to be some kind of
juno, but still,it's far beyond what i have expected.
Thanx a lot for every advice you might have for me.

i gotta say i was pretty displeased when i found the same with my
evolver 2.0 I got about a month ago, i basicly went through and
modified the patches and turned things that were clipping down a
bit ,thought it was pretty strange they would ship it like that
though. I must say though that since getting the 3.0 upgrade and
loading the new patches that came with that, they all sound much
better and dont have that problem.

Re: clipping

when i got the evolver i listened to the presets and noticed the same
thing. however, when i started doing my own sounds (buying an evo for
the presets sounds a bit fishy anyway) it became clear that there was
nothing wrong with the synth itself. if bad vst:s had this much chaos
and mayhem in them, i'd use my laptop a lot more. ;D

btw. the installation of 3.0 was dead easy, probably the best 25 bucks
i've spent in a while.

Re: clipping

Ditto what polyf0nken said. After awhile, you'll get used to the
various gain stages in the Evolver (Oscillators, Amp, Amp Env,
Program Volume, Master Volume, Distortion, Resonance, etc) It's more
a part of the 'character' of the Evolver than anything. If anything,
load up the 3.0 presets or Key programs. A lot of them have been
toned down from the original presets, and even if loaded on 2.0, will
only have slight differences from their intended sound.

My Evolver goes up to 11.

Well,yes,i have a 2.0.No,of curse I didn't buy the evo for the
presets,c'mon.I love to program my own patches, this came from
reaktor and nord modular, but as some of the people agreed,it's very
strange to ship it like that.I love the distorted sounds of evo,I
wasn't talking about them!I was talking about the clipped ones,y'now?
like,a pad,nice one,which is like
wwwWWWOOOOOoooOOOMMppprrstzttprpprprprp.Lol,i know,but,what good is
that clipping at the ending of a pretty sweet pad?And there are a
lot of them.Really, sometimes i get tired of ever programming my own
patches,so it will be nice not to have to adjust volumes and stuff
every time i want to relax myself with a drone,a pad..

Anyway, thanx guys,i will definitelly buy the 3.0 chip.
cheers

Update Nation OS X

2005-08-26 by hodsonmonster

Howdy all,

got my new PIC for my evolver (desktop). ready for transmission protocol update, however
I wondered what you guys used to blast across the update via MIDI? I have the official
Evolver editor software, has anyone used this? Or does anyone recommend any other other
platform for the update?

Im using Mac OS x for the update,

Many thanks

(im so excited) WOOOOOO yeah!!!

Re: clipping

2005-08-30 by secontek

I think I figured the source of the "nasty" glitches. It's the delay.
I loaded the 3.0 sounds(via midiox).
Say for example,patch D-015,a sweet melody,which has lfo3 and 4 to
delay time 2 and 3.The evolver led shows no clipping but there are
some really nasty clip-like sounds, like a broken vinyl in 4 bits.
Also,I've noticed this with all the patches wich involves delay time
modulation,or delay level modulations,or even without modulation.
The second i turn the delay level down(and/or disable the
modulations),all of these problems dissapear, the sound is ok,even
with a high degree of feedback, and even if the evolver clip led
stays always red-actually,it sounds really cool that way.
I know,i can use another delay, but i just wonder,is it just my evo
with this problem or it's the same with all of them ?
I have a 2.0 evolver.

Re: clipping

Hmmm, this does not sound normal to me(other than it sounding good
with the Clip LED on :) The delay, even with a high amount of
feedback, should sound similar to the Tuned Feedback (which is
basically a delay line in itself). I drop Dave a line.

I'm using linux (debian); I just do:

  cat FILE > /dev/midi

(where FILE is the file containing the update)

I've never had any problems.

I definitely get noise/glitches when I try to modulate the delay
length, which is a little bit annoying. I have an old evolver with 3.0
chip

Given the way delay works, I'd be surprised if you _didn't_ get
glitches ... you're basically repositioning a pointer into the audio
