OT: K4/5 vs. SNIIk

OT: K4/5 vs. SNIIk

2003-01-19 by Ravi Ivan Sharma

Paul, you gave the Novation K4/5 a glowing review in SOS. I was wondering on
your thoughts regarding bang for buck in comparison to the SupernovaII if
you know about that one. I can get a used SNII keyboard for nearly the same
price as a K5. Given that, what is the better choice if I am looking for a
good VA? I think SNIIk but since the K5 is newer, I wondering if that had
any bearing.

Thanks if you can add something!

Ravi

It's a very tough question. On the one hand you have the SN2 with its
superb arpeggiators, more complex filter modes, extended polyphony,
more parts, less friendly UI (IMHO), FM etc., comb filters (effects
section)...
All this set against the simpler KS4/5 with only 4 parts, 16notes
polyphony, better UI, less flexible arpeggiators BUT sounding
"better"...

I really couldn't balance the SN2 features against the KS4 sound....
only your own needs and ears can do that for you.

Paul

Wow. I knew it. Hmmm. In the K4/5 review the filter's were mentioned as "different" than the SNII but not implied to be better either way. I some comments were made regarding the newer liquid audio or whatnot of the K4. Arrgh! And the K4 is nice and shorter too . . . bastards!

You know what, Ravi? You need to show those sumb1ches at Novation
that they can't just push you around like this... Go buy a K4/5 AND
the SN2. That'll teach 'em. ;)
