Poly Evolver compared to Prophet VS

Poly Evolver compared to Prophet VS

2007-01-10 by dnaflr2

I know, I know, Evolver uses the same wave tables as the Prophet VS, but does anyone here
actually own both machines, and done a side by side comparison?

I am in the market to pick one or the other up, and would really like to know what everyone's
opinion is. I know Evolver has a great sound, but I how well can it imitate the Prophet VS?
What are the differences besides the obvious specs?

Thanks,
J

In short: a VS is a VS and an Evolver is an Evolver. Different machines
with different designs and from very different times.

If you want the sound of a VS more than you want the sound of an Evolver get
a VS. If not, get the Evolver.

This is a good way to look at it. I would also suggest scouring the net - I'm sure you'll find
some VS samples/demos online to listen to. Compare these to the Evolver demos on the
DSI site. It won't be a side-by-side-exact-patch-comparison but it will get you close.

As an owner of a VS and a Desktop evolver I would say that these are
completely different instruments, with the shared waveforms being the
only, very small, thing that they have in common. The VS and evolver do
completely different things with these waves using very different
synthesis method. Both are great, but at very different things.

I picked up a PEK a few weeks ago, hooked it up a few days ago
and I am very impressed with the sound compared to my other synths ...
going to be hard to compare it to anything other than another from DSI ...
previous, only compare I did previous was at NAMM with head phones and the web mp3s... nada like real life with your
stuff for a real one on one ... ;-)
