No sound from sequencer

Hello, I just bought a used desktop Evolver. I tried following the quick start instructions in the manual, but the unit must not be in its default state, because I don't get any sound out. Well ok, I have gotten one sound: a continuous sine-like tone from program 128 of bank 1. But from the reading I've done so far it seems the lights should start indicating sequencer steps after I hit the start button, but this also does not happen. The light above the start/stop button comes on, but the lights under numbers 1-8 don't do anything. I've been reading the manual and tweaking knobs, but so far I haven't figured it out. I will start reading Anu's guide tomorrow, but in the meantime, can anyone offer any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong? Is there any way to reset everything to default? And another question: how can I tell what OS version is installed? Thanks, Matt
