Crossfading Oscillators w/LFOs

Crossfading Oscillators w/LFOs

2007-03-05 by wilsontherocker

Does anyone know if it is possible to crossfade between oscillators
(say, 3 & 4) using the LFOs? I've tried, but so far I've only gotten
what sounds like the rise and fall of one osc, followed by the rise
and fall of the other with no overlap whatsoever.

I have been able to get the sound I'm looking for by using Env3 to
raise the level of an osc while simutaneously using Env3 negatively
(via a mod bus) to bring down the level of another osc. But obviously,
this is not loopable. Is there a way to do this with LFOs?

My overall goal here is to get some Prophet VS-style morphing
textures, but I'm just not sure it is possible with the evolver.

It seems to me that what's required here is the ability to mess with
the phase of the LFOs to give the cross-fading you'd like. As far as
I'm aware, this capability isn't available on the evolver, which is a
shame.

One possible work-around might be to use env3 to control the speed of,
say, LFO2. You could modulate the level of osc3 with LFO1, and osc4
with LFO2. By using env3 to control the speed of LFO2, you can
ffectively offset the phase of LFO2 from LFO1. The idea is to control
the 'steady-state' speed of LF02 with the sustain portion of env 3, and
have that match the speed of LFO1. By varying the attack and decay
times, you should be able to offset the phase of LFO1 and LF02 in its
steady state. There will, of course, be some strangeness going on
while env3 is getting to its sustain portion, but in the steady state
you might get the effect you're looking for, with some trial and error.

Of course, all of the above could be way off the mark, as with pretty
much anything you read on the internet.

I'd try it today, but my evolver's on its way back from minor surgery
at DSI, so I won't have it until Wednesday some time.

I think I programmed at least two or three patches like this, probably
way back for the original Evolver presets, but possibly for the PER or
PEK presets. I think the name of one of these presets was "rEvolver",
but I'm not positive.

Anyway, IIRC, all I did was use a *single* LFO (triangle wave) to
modulate the amplitude and/or filter cutoff of two oscillators. Set
the initial amplitude/volume of the two oscillators to something in
the middle range, then apply a positive amp/filter modulation from the
LFO to the first OSC, and a negative amp/filter modulation from the
same LFO to the second OSC.

One detail that I may have incorrect above... you might need to set
the initial amplitude/volume of one OSC at max, and the other OSC at
zero. Sorry... I don't remember 100%, and I don't have my Evolver
handy! ;)

Yeah, unfortunately, you can't directly control LFO phase, but by
using positive and negative modulation amounts, you effectively have
the ability to use both 0 and 180 phases of the LFO wave.

Make sure you try this with all four OSC: two LFOs running at
different speeds, with one LFO crossfading two oscillators, and the
second LFO crossfading the other two oscillators. You'll get some
nice, well... EVOLVING textures!

Hope that gets you going in the right direction.
