Soundtower issues

Soundtower issues

2008-11-21 by haroldland2

Regarding demo versions of the Soundtower editing software for PC, for
the mono evolver desktop, (please don't laugh) running on Windows 98,
because that computer has midi ports on the front panel.

1. I have played around with the demo version of Soundtower 3.8, and
it will not display all the program names in the factory banks.
It only shows names for bank 1 and part of bank 3. I have tried
reinstalling the software and reloading the factory programs & etc.
Anyone else have this prob? Is there a list of names for the (evo
version 3) 4 factory banks posted anywhere?

2. Last week i downloaded the newest Soundtower version 4.something,
and it will not even start (my ancient computer does exceed the system
requirements). I uninstalled both 3.8 and 4.#, reinstalled 4 and still
no go. When the registration screen comes up I click 'demo version'
and then there is a kernel error. I can copy the exact message if
that would help.

3. I emailed Soundtower on both of these issues (#1 months ago) but
they have not replied, maybe if i pay for the non working software
they will respond?

regards
Harold

> (please don't laugh) running on Windows 98,

I'm not laughing. I custom built a Windows 98 music computer right
before XP came out and it keeps going. Most of my other music
equipment is older than the computer so it seems relatively young (and
upgrading/replacing would be $1500 to 2000 at a minimum for hardware
and software).

> It only shows names for bank 1 and part of bank 3. I have tried

I've been considering the editor as a way to keep myself from buying a
MoPho so I finally installed it (on Win98) and get the exact same
thing. I have a custom wind controller bank installed in bank 2, but
that probably doesn't have names. Are you sure that every patch has a
unique name?

I was going to write how Microsoft is dropping support for XP next year,
and stopped supporting 98 in 1993, and then laugh at the sillyness of
expecting SoundTower support on XP, but the SoundTower website clearly
does state their Evo app works on Windows 98.

On a similar topic, I have an old laptop with Windows 98 and was
wondering how I might make good use of it for playing live. The thing
has USB ports and I have my old Cakewalk 2.0 disks. All I need is a MIDI
interface and I'm ready to rock. What I don't have is a spare battery,
so unplugs will be deadly. Anyone think it's worth the effort?

I bought a Dell 810 notebook with XP, 80GB HD & 1MB RAM, added a missing battery and totaled <$325.00. I myself have not found the MS OS not reach enough maturity and stability until WinNT/Win2k and would not try anything less than that for studio & live with today's software. I do keep an old Atari ST for some special stuff, but that's it....keep multiple systems if you want some old stuff but specifically going backwards begs for low compatibility....

Soundtower issues

2008-11-22 by Anu Kirk

In my experience, the patch name data in the desktop Evolver (at least the factory patches) never really "retrieves" right. I suspect it's because most of the patches don't have proper names in their data.

I manually entered made-up names via SoundTower for them all (tedious!) but after that it worked fine.

Can't help you with your other issues. I'm sure others have said it before, but...Windows 98 is 10 years old. Windows XP is pretty good...
