the PEK encoder upgrade -- yes, a very good thing

2011-06-10 by steven

after screwing around with those crappy stock encoders on my PEK , erratically jumpy knob response, messing with deoxit etc. I sent my 3 PC boards in for the ENCODER ugrade to detent encoders--total cost $75. [this is not the POT switch that costs over $300] I like the encoders, i did not want pots .

I must say, The new detent encoders are GREAT, basically each click turns the setting one number--(sometimes the first click doesnt change the setting -but starts on the second click) This had dramatically improved the feel of the controls and the accuracy of programming. You can brush your hand on the knobs and they dont change . (i really hated that before). I dont see why they just didnt put these in from the getgo. I highly reccomend this ---

on the down side, there were two weeks of down time and i screwed up on saving my programs but after restoring my lost sounds all i can say is that this really made the PEK a LOT better. well worth the money. It felt so cheesy before. (i also sprang for the Prophet style knobs and the thing now looks cool too, the original knobs were so cheap and ugly). While one could complain that this should be a free factory recall, getting 50 new encoders for $75 is a good deal. They actually switch the boards so be sure to save all your programs on a computer file and be sure to check the OS upon getting them back--they came back with some odd OS that i had to update.

thanks for the note, cool
I was just talking to Cynthia Webster (modular maker)last weekend about
this and the P'08.

Mine is really starting to get serious on the bouncing now ...

However, a few times, the random jump has lead to something more
interesting in the patch sound ... ;-)but it is making a pain in the
behind on recording, 5 to 8 retakes, more if it gets loud ....

midi data clicking sound

Hi all
Having a strange problem I was wondering if any one ells had
basically it seems that when I record the evolver in as audio its
picking up a sound that sounds like the midi data as well
if you turn a knob you can hear the 128 divisions clicking through? the
problem disappears when I unplug the midi cable
guess it could be a problem with my interface but thought i'd check here

Cheers
Luke.

Ok so it seems a re-plug of the audio cables fixed the problem
still I guess its one to watch out for, recorded a jam with out noticing
this clicking sound until I ran a compressor over it :P
