New owner...

2002-11-02 by elcastigo

I've never owned a synth like this, so I'm not yet comfortable with
the interface. I just received mine yesterday (serial # 40) and
have been playing around with it quite a bit.

So far I've really been digging the sounds, but have been having
some difficulties getting my head around some of the
parameters. There have been a couple of times when I have
inadvertantly shut off the sequencer just through some random
knob twiddling.

I'm glad this group exists...

Welcome to the club, EC. Don't worry or get frustrated. It will
take a little time before you're comfortable programming the Evolver,
especially since this is the first synth of this type that you've
owned. I highly recommend you do a little research to learn the
basics of analog subtractive synthesis. Just do a search using
Google, and you'll turn up dozens of resources. Learning the basics
of subtractive synthesis will make using the Evolver seem a lot
simpler.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm pretty familiar with subtractive
synthesis. Although this is the first REAL analog synth I've used,
I also own a Nord Lead 2 and a Virus B which model subtractive
synthesis. One thing that I'm confident about in regard to the
Evolver is the tweaking of the sounds - pretty easy, and very nice
all around (with lots and lots of possibilities).

What I find most difficult is the midi implementation. I wasn't
sure if the sequencer transmitted midi data. The consensus seems to
be that it doesn't, so I can quit banging my head against the wall
trying to get it to do something that it wasn't designed to do (this
is really a relief - I thought mine might be defective). As for
other midi stuff (sending and receiving) I plan on fooling around
with that tonight. So far, I really like it and I think it will be
a useful tool.

Whoops... Sorry about that! I misunderstood. Given your history
with the Nord and the Virus, you'll catch on quickly.

Regarding the sequencer sending MIDI data... I was so wrapped up in
creating sounds/sequences for the Evolver that I never tested this
myself. I did all my work on pre-production unit #0002, but I now
have a regular production unit (#0009). Anyway, I'll have to give it
a try, though it sounds like I'm going to find out that the answer
is "no".

Ski,

No problem - my original post was vague.

I too am mostly wrapped up in using the sounds in the Evolver,
but I was curious to see how far I could stretch it as a controller.
It's strength is its ease of use as a stand alone unit - great
sounds, cool patterns, etc.
