Yamaha DTXpress/DTXplorer/DTXtreme

Greetings to everybody.  I'm new to this group having just bought a 
dtxpress.  My setup is the dtx running into a roland a-880 midi 
patcher then into my pc.  I'm using cubase 5 as a sequencer.  I am 
able to get midi in and out, but when I attempt to record, the brain 
automatically changes to a kit I didn't select (always the same kit).
It seems that a message might be coming from the sequencer, but I 
feel like I'm looking into a labyrinth and as for the manual, it's 
really no help. Like most manuals, it assumes that you are something 
beyond a beginner.  I am hoping there will be 
someone among you all that can set me straight on this and that as my 
knowledge grows around this instrument I will be able to help 
somebody else in need.
