The II module has a red faceplate with DTXpress II written prominently across the top. If what you got was the DTXpress I, you should be compensated for the deception or the error. But it is by no means a substandard kit. The DTXPI featured 7 stereo inputs and the same dual-mono extra input 9/10 as on the II. As OGD mentioned, the kick pedal is different, and inferior. The hi hat is comparable. The II featured a host of improvements, ranging from the user-friendliness of the rack to the better-textured and slightly more responsive cymbal pads and the three- sound snare, but the two kits aren't worlds apart by any respect. Unless you can spend more money on a genuine II, or even III, you as a novice would not be badly served with a first-generation DTXpress, assuming again that nothing is wrong with it. If the store will take off $150 or so for its mistake, it might be worthwhile. It's up to you, though. Ed
