I am sure Ed will jump in if I am wrong, but I think the Roland and
Yamaha Hi-Hat pedals work in the opposite sense so are not compatible.
 There are adaptors around to fix the problem.

This is one, but I think is for using a Roland on the Yamaha rather
than the other way round.
