Tony,

Other brains will work with the DTXpress, but not necessarily as
easily as a Yamaha brain. But modules with fine adjustments for input
sensitivity (almost all of them except Yamaha's) should be able to
compensate for most triggering anomalies on mono pads out of the gate.
Don't forget, however, that not all brains have inputs compatible with
Yamaha's edge/bow or center/rim rubber pads. Many modules that have
found their way to the market take only mono/dual-zone pads (like the
Alesis or ddrum ones, for example); they will fail to operate Yamaha's
rim-switches, accessing only the main piezos. Yamaha hi hats also work
on proprietary principles, requiring at the very least, an adaptor for
use on Roland and Roland-compatible equipment. Don't buy anything,
without trying it first or at least without credible testimony from
the e-drum community.

hi ed,

you mentioned in this response that yamaha hi-hats also work on roland modules; do you
know if yamaha's RHH 130 will work with a roland TD-20 module? i have never seen or
heard of the adaptors of which you speak. i'm debating between getting a td-20 or getting
a dtxtreme IIs. i already have the hi hat.

thank you,

I am sure Ed will jump in if I am wrong, but I think the Roland and
Yamaha Hi-Hat pedals work in the opposite sense so are not compatible.
There are adaptors around to fix the problem.

This is one, but I think is for using a Roland on the Yamaha rather
than the other way round.

Tony,

Traditionally, Yamaha hi hats have required a special adapter that
changes polarity, among other things, for use with Roland modules.
I'd be surprised if the RHH 130 works with the TD-20 without help.
You could check with Ed Morin at Drumbalaya, or one of his staff; you
should be aware of Drumbalaya, anyway. This store produces its own
adapter for predicaments like yours and routinely tests for component
compatibility.

I should also mention a little trick involving a little device dubbed
the "Shack adapter" at the Roland board (vdrums.com)--a stereo-to-
mono connector available at Radio Shack for about $3.00 (part # 274-
1520C). I've never had occasion to try it, but people swear by it.
Just plug the stereo end of the adapter into the the hi-hat
controller; the mono cable plugs into the adapter on one end and the
Roland module's high-hat jack on the other end. If all goes according
to plan, the Yamaha hi hat thereby adjusts to Roland demands.
