Working with the 3 Zone DTXpander

Working with the 3 Zone DTXpander

2006-07-19 by smithabcdef

Hello all,

This is more of an informational post than a question. Well, it
started out as a question, then I found the answer, and I thought that
you all may be interested.

I am attempting to make a 3 zone ride cymbal, using the circuit
DTXpander 3 zone, but am having a few problems. If I test it on the
snare input, all is well, and I can get three different sounds.
However, I cannot get the ride (or crash, for that matter), to accept
more than two inputs - they only seem to recognise the main input and
the edge.

During the course of my troubleshooting, I tried hooking my snare pad
(TP65S) into the ride input; even then it does not detect more than 2
inputs.

The manual says that "3 zone pads... can be connected to Trigger Input
Jacks 2 Snare, 6 Ride, and 7 Crash 1".

At this time, I thought about the trigger settings. I had already set
the ride / crash to PCY3 (3 zone cymbal), so I assumed all was well.
I was wrong.

It seems as if PCY3 does not work with 3 zone inputs; instead, I had
to set it to Snare/A. After I did that, I could get regular, edge,
and cup sounds from my sensors via the DTXpander circuit. So, in case
anybody cares, use the input type as Snare if you have problems with
the third zone of a three zone pad.

Just out of interest, do other people have this problem as well? Or
am I unique in that?

Thanks

Well, I wouldn't say I have a problem with it - I run a 3 zone ride.
I just checked and I have it set up as a snare, but then I am using a
TP65S as my ride! Only misc2 and snare seem to give 3 zones on the
ride.

However, I don't think PCY3 on the trigger settings means 3 zone - I
don't think Yamaha make a 3 zone cymbal. PCY3 is listed for
PCY80S/80/65S/65/80/10 which are all old single and dual zone cymbals
I think. Lots of "I think" here because I am only familiar with what I
have.

Glad the 3 zone Xpander works.

Keith.

Are you who designed this circuit? I am doing a writeup on my website
about my experiences when making this 3 zone ride, and I would like to
include a copy of this diagram to aid whoever may find it useful;
however, I want to give credit where credit is due, as well as obtain
permission to mirror a copy instead of just linking to it.

If you (or whomever is the author of it) could give me permission to
do the following, that would be excellent:

a) Allow me to mirror the file on my webpage, in the event that the
file here becomes unavailable
b) If you want any more credit than just your name, please let me know
a webpage / email (if you want it included), etc that you wish for me
to include.

Once the page is complete, I will post a link to it here, so that any
DIYers out there can perhaps get some insight on this sort of project.

Thanks!

Wyatt

Wyatt,

Yes, I designed it. It can also be found at
http://edrum.for.free.fr/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=48
so a link to that site may be useful to people.

I am happy for you to feature it on your web site. Please include the
disclaimer that it is without any warranty and I accept no liablity
etc, and is for non-commercial use only (i.e. I don't want people
starting to sell them). I am happy to answer queries about it - that
is the only way it will improve, if it can. Use keith at kdel.co.uk.
Also, I have built some (2 zone) ones for people who are not
confident to do it for themselves, and am happy to continue to do that
(I have had a PCB made).

Keith.
