Tom,

That option changes the function of the volume controls so you can
independently adjust the snare & kick without holding down the shift
key, and adjust the cymbals & toms by holding down the shift key. 
However, if you had accidentally gone into live mode and had the
accomp. & click volumes set low then the kick and snare would be weak.
