Both the rims use a switch, with the rim 2 switch having a 10k
resistor in series with it.  If you are getting rim2 sounds from rim
1, it suggests the rim has a higher resistance than it should have. 
This could be due to a bad connection (or cable) or, more likely, a
faulty rim switch.  As it is fairly new it would be worthwhile getting
it swapped under warranty after eliminating the cable as a possible cause.
