Yes, you need to put the two ends of the pot across the piezo, connect
 the tip of the jack to the module to the wiper of the pot and the
sleeve to the sleeve side of the pad (which will also be connected to
one end of the pot). 

I wonder if your problems might be due to the setup of the module, for
example, the pad gain and other trigger settings?  If you don't mind
losing any custom settings a factory reset may be in order (see page
32 of the manual).
