Triggers Too Hot For DTXv2

Triggers Too Hot For DTXv2

2007-06-28 by Chuck Hays

Hello,
This is not strictly a DTXpress question, but I'm hoping someone here will have some experience with the older Yamaha module.
I use a DTXv2 module and I'm having trouble adding new pads or replacing the old ones - the signal from the new pads seem really hot and I can't get really get any dynamics from them. The original pads - TP80s work well and give me some controllable dynamics. As for new pads, so far I've tried:
Fat Pedal (from Drumtech/DrumKat) - WAY too hot. Double triggers like crazy. I put a pot inline and I can dial the signal down so that it stops double triggering, but I can't get a good dynamic range - every stroke registers really high.
Yamaha TP65s Cymbals - they work and choke correctly, but I don't get a good dynamic range and sometimes they "choke themselves" by double-triggering (the second trigger has a very low velocity - at least that is what I think is happening).
Yamaha TP100 - Doesn't work well at all - even with the built in sensitivity knob.
Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone suggest a way to overcome the problem?
I'd like to build myself some DIY mesh head pads, especially for the snare, but based on the trouble I've had with factory equipment I'm not confident I can make the DIY work very well either.
Any help appreciated.
Chuck

Chuck,

I cannot help you with the pads, but when you say you put a pot
"inline", exactly how did you connect it? You need to put the pot
across the pad, with the wiper and one end of the pad going to the
module. Try something like 100k.

Mind you, if the TP100 doesn't work well, with its built in pot, then
I am a bit puzzled.

Maybe it is a polarity problem. Try reversing the connections.

Keith.

Thank you Keith.
For the pedal, I connected one of the piezo leads directly to the 1/4" jack, connected the other lead to the pot, then connected the pot to the 1/4" jack. Could I have done it differently? I don't know what the pot was (100k or something different), it was just one I had lying around. I set it about 1/3 from the bottom.
On the TP100 I'm puzzled as well. There are attenuation DIP switches on the back of the module but to be honest they don't seem to make any difference. I'm really beginning to wonder if the module is the whole problem.

Yes, you need to put the two ends of the pot across the piezo, connect
the tip of the jack to the module to the wiper of the pot and the
sleeve to the sleeve side of the pad (which will also be connected to
one end of the pot).

I wonder if your problems might be due to the setup of the module, for
example, the pad gain and other trigger settings? If you don't mind
losing any custom settings a factory reset may be in order (see page
32 of the manual).

Keith.

I think you're right about the factory reset. I think I'll try that over the weekend and report back.
Thanks!
