My KP65 started to wear out within 3 months of average pounding with a
double pedal. I inspected the thing and at first sight it looked like
parts are not readily user-replaceable so before moving forward on
that I contacted Yamaha. Bottom line: "replace the entire thing if it
wears out badly". I was a bit disappointed with the answer as I
expected a more encouraging response from the company.

I resorted to install a kick drum impact patch on the pad itself right
where the beaters hit. This was almost 8 months ago and as far as I
can tell the KP65 pad has not worn further - at least visually; no
alterations to the pad's response noticed neither. I figure I will
have to replace the entire KP65 assembly eventually as it does takes a
beating. When I do that, I will install another impact patch before I
play the thing.
