You don't say which version of the DTXpress you have so I have assumed version 1.  Let me know if it is different as the manual pages will be different.

You should be able to get four sounds from the hihat, plus some sounds between open and closed.  You should get:
 
open - when you hit the pad and the pedal is not fully closed
close - when you hit the pad and the pad is fully closed
footCL - when you close the pedal
Splash - when you close the pedal and immediately open it.

Also, between "open" and "close" you should get a few other partially closed sounds when you hit the pad.  There are also rim sounds if you have a 2 zone pad for the hihat.

First, make sure you are using a stereo cable for the hihat pedal.  It is always worthwhile swapping it for another one just to make sure it isn't faulty.  I assume you have it plugged into input the HiHat Control input.

If the cable is ok, try a different pre-programmed trigger set and different pre-programmed kit to make sure it isn't your kit/trigger settings.

There is a hihat sensitivity setting - see page 5-3 of the "Reference Guide" (not the "Owners Manual").  I have mine set to 20 which is the default.  It is part of the kit settings.

There is also a hihat offset (HH Offs) and splash detect time (T) in the utility menu (see page 29 of the Reference Guide").  I have mine set to -10 & 45 respectively, although the default is -10 & 32.  The splash time can be tricky to get right, although it is mainly down to the technique of playing.

There is also a physical adjustment on the hihat pedal at the front - use a drum key.  It can help if you find you are having to press too hard to keep the hihat closed.
