You might want to try adjusting the attenuator switch at the back of the module.  I run with all reject settings at zero and MVEL=1 and GAIN=99 but then I use a snare stand, not the rack.  On the rack you may need some rejection settings other than zero.  

I have also added a small 100k potentiometer that I soldered to the connector in the shell to help tame the signal.

With the cylindrical foam the pads can tend to be over-sensitive in the centre.  I think if you buy or make a cone (something that Roland patented and wouldn't let Pintech use even though they allow Pintech to use other aspects of the Roland patents) it may improve.  I think the cones are more progressive from the centre.  The other thing that makes a difference, I am told, is a two ply mesh head.  The Pintech is single ply whereas the Roland heads are double ply.
