New Mesh Head !

New Mesh Head !

2010-08-24 by bigbearstyx

Guys just rec'vd a Pintech (by Roland) dual zone 10 in snare, used.
But, in what looks to be good shape. 1st mesh head so it's new to me.

Do I need to really re-adjust sensitivity for this snare now.?
I hit the mesh head and unless im exactly over the piezo I don't resister a good hit..AND its kinda spotty--
missing some hits (if I really hit it hard and in the center).

Wondering if its a setting, multiple settings or Maybe the mesh head is bad? ?

Does the drum have a foam rubber cylinder between the mesh head and the piezo?
That was the old style design for Pintech, not sure about newer ones. I
replaced the cylinder with a tapered design from Roland which seems to work
better. You can also replace the mesh head with a regular head and see what
happens. And eventually you may need to play around with module sensitivity.
My impression is Pintech mesh drums aren't the best, but you can get them to
work okay with a little effort.

You might want to try adjusting the attenuator switch at the back of the module. I run with all reject settings at zero and MVEL=1 and GAIN=99 but then I use a snare stand, not the rack. On the rack you may need some rejection settings other than zero.

I have also added a small 100k potentiometer that I soldered to the connector in the shell to help tame the signal.

With the cylindrical foam the pads can tend to be over-sensitive in the centre. I think if you buy or make a cone (something that Roland patented and wouldn't let Pintech use even though they allow Pintech to use other aspects of the Roland patents) it may improve. I think the cones are more progressive from the centre. The other thing that makes a difference, I am told, is a two ply mesh head. The Pintech is single ply whereas the Roland heads are double ply.

Can you still buy the Roland foam cones for a retrofit? M. Friend used to have
them, but last time I checked, they were no longer available.

I don't know, but this is the place to ask:

If not, there is plenty of information there about making your own, I think.

You will have to order them directly from Roland. I think they will only sell a maximum of 6 at a time and I don’t recall how much they were, but I don’t remember them being cheap. You can occasionally find someone on the web that sales “bootleg” versions of them. Or like Keith said, do a google search on how to make your own.
